Marianne St-Gelais led the women's short track speed skating team to gold while Mikael Kingsbury proved he's still the king of the moguls hill, leading a trio of Canadians onto the podium. Sensational skeleton rookie Elizabeth Vathje won her 4th medal and biathelete Nathan Smith posted back-to-back personal bests.

Step right this way for the Canadian Trail.

Marianne St-Gelais wins gold

The Canadian women's short track speed skating team threw down a gold medal performance Sunday in the relay event at the World Cup in Dresden, Germany. Marianne St-Gelais of St-Felicien, Quebec and her teammates Kasandra Bradette, Audrey Phaneuf and Kim Boutin beat the field by more than a second, finishing with a time of four minutes 13.107 seconds.

On Saturday St-Gelais earned a bronze in the 1,000 metre final behind Korea's Alang Kim and Kexin Fan of China.

On the men's side, Francois Hamelin won a silver in the 500 metre event and his brother Charles won bronze in the 1,500 metre Sunday. Patrick Duffy, of Oakville, Ont., was fifth in the men's 1,000 metre on Saturday.

Canadians finished strong in the consolation finals on Saturday with Olivier Jean, of Lachenaie, Que. winning both the 1,000 and 1,500 B finals, while Valerie Maltais, of La Baie, Que. took the women's 1,500 B final. Charles Hamelin of St-Julie, Que. was penalized in the men's 1,000 semifinal and did not advance.

The Canadian short track team now has 21 medals this season.

Mikael Kingsbury still king of the hill

There's no let-up in sight for Deux Montagnes, Que, freestyle skier Mikael Kingsbury as he won his fifth consecutive World Cup race Saturday in Val-Saint Come, Que. as he closes in on a fourth moguls Crystal Globe as the series winner.

Kingsbury, 22, captured his 26th World Cup victory on a day that saw two other Canadians make podium appearances. Montreal's Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, the 2014 Olympic silver medallist, finished second behind American Hannah Kearney, while Audrey Robichaud of Quebec City, placed third in her 99th World Cup event. It was Robichaud's first podium of the season and sixth in her career.

With three events remaining, Kingsbury is only 53 points away from a fourth consecutive World Cup moguls title. Each win is worth 100 points.

Skeleton sensation Elizabeth Vathje on track

It's difficult to determine which is the bigger surprise, Dustin Cook winning Canada's first world championship Super G medal, a silver Thursday at Beaver Creek, Colorado, or the extraordinary season turned in by World Cup skeleton rookie Elizabeth Vathje of Calgary.

Cook, who had never cracked the top 10 in a world cup alpine race, sped to his silver topping the field with the exception of Austria's Hannes Reichelt. The result came virtually out of nowhere for the 25-year-old Ottawa resident.

Vathje, 20, has been brilliant in her first World Cup season, and has had success at Igls, Austria before, earning a Top 6 finish at the world juniors championships two years ago. Saturday, Vathje was second to Great Britain's Lizzy Yarnold, her third runner-up result to go along with a victory in Calgary.

"Silver is my new favourite colour I guess," laughed Vathje from her hotel room in Austria. "I'm pretty excited. I had two personal best pushes on both runs today. It was such a close race and I just kind of let it go and let the sled do its job again today."

Nathan Smith posts back-to-back career bests

It was a banner weekend for one of Canada's best biathletes, Nathan Smith. The 29-year-old Calgary native posted a personal best on Saturday in the men's 10 kilometre sprint and then put up another career best on Sunday in the 12.5 kilometre pursuit at the Biathlon World Cup in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. He shot clean both days to place seventh and fifth respectively.

Smith finished with a time of 24 minutes, 47.6 seconds on Saturday and 37 minutes, 49.0 seconds on Sunday.

More from the Canadian Trail

  • Canada's sledge hockey team defeated Korea 4-1 to take third place at the World Sledge Hockey Championships in Leduc, Alb. Tyler McGregor paced the win with a pair of goals.
  • Canada was eliminated from the Fed Cup tennis competition in Quebec City, Que. Sunday by defending champions Czech Republic Sunday in a 4-0 sweep. Karolina Pliskova defeated Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski 6-4, 6-2. Denisa Allertova and Lucie Hradecka defeated Dabrowski and Montreal's Francoise Abanda 6-1, 7-6 in the doubles match to complete the sweep. Canada, without star player Eugenie Bouchard, dropped two matches on Saturday. Francoise Abanda lost 6-2, 6-4 to Karolina Pliskova, while Dabrowski, fell to Tereza Smitkova, 6-1, 6-2. With the defeat, Canada is forced to compete in the World Group play-off on April 18 and 19 to try and retain a spot in the Fed Cup for 2016.
  • Four women bobsledders made history Saturday in Park City, Utah when they competed against men in a North America Cup 4-man race. Led by pilot Alysia Rissling, the crew of Julia Corrente, Courtenay Farrington and Josee Thoret, placed seventh out of eight sleds in the competition, which is one level below World Cup. In December, Calgary's Kaillie Humphries and American Elana Meyers Taylor were the first women to compete against men, but their sleds were filled with three men though driven by the women. The hope is that World Cup and Olympic events will eventually have women competing against women in 4-person competition.
  • Canadian long track speed skaters produced fifth, sixth and seventh place results in World Cup competition at Heerenveen, Netherlands Saturday. Denny Morrison, Fort St. John, B.C. was fifth in the 1,000, Laurent Dubreuil, Levis, Que. was sixth in a 500 metre race, while Kali Christ, of Regina, finished seventh in the women's 1,000.
