March Madness continued Saturday with No. 1 Villanova upset by eighth-seeded N.C. State while Canadian Trey Lyles and No. 1 seed Kentucky overcame a tough test against Cincinnati to reach the Sweet 16 and Arizona overcame a sluggish start to beat Ohio State.
(8) N.C. State 71, (1) Villanova 68
Villanova went from a top seed to No. 1-and-done.
N.C. State is back in the Sweet 16, attacking one of the top teams in the nation for 40 minutes and stunning Villanova and Canadian Dylan Ennis on Saturday night. The Wolfpack went wild as the final horn sounded and danced around the court in celebration.
N.C. State guards Cat Barber and Desmond Lee shared a long embrace after buzzer. Barber pounded his chest and said, "all heart!"
Lacey led them with 17 points and Barber had 13, each coming with big buckets to hold off a late Villanova charge.
(1) Kentucy 64, (8) Cincinnati 51
Aaron Harrison scored 13 points, Canadian Trey Lyles added 11 with 11 rebounds and top-ranked Kentucky outworked Cincinnati for a victory to remain undefeated and reach the Sweet 16 for the second straight season.
Despite the Wildcats' sixth straight double-digit win, they faced their toughest test in a while and didn't seem totally in control until the final minutes.
But the Wildcats succeeded by making life difficult on both ends for Cincinnati, holding the Bearcats to 32 per cent shooting including just 24 per cent in the second half.
(3) Notre Dame 67, (6) Butler 64
Notre Dame survived Butler's March magic.
Jerian Grant scored 16 points, including the clinching layup with 18 seconds left in overtime, and the third-seeded Irish edged the Bulldogs 67-64 on Saturday night.
Notre Dame (31-5) moved on to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003 and will play Kansas or Wichita State in the Midwest Regional semifinals on Thursday in Cleveland.
(4) North Carolina 87, (5) Arkansas 78
Marcus Paige scored 22 points, including 20 in the second half, and North Carolina beat Arkansas 87-78 in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in three years.
Paige missed seven of eight shots in the first half, including all three from 3-point range, and was pretty much a non-factor as the Tar Heels let the Razorbacks keep things close.
(2) Arizona 73, (10) Ohio State 58
Gabe York made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, T.J. McConnell also scored 19 points and Arizona advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third straight year with a over Ohio State.
The Wildcats overcame a sluggish start until their outside shooting busted the Buckeyes' zone defence, which they rarely used during the regular season but broke out for the NCAA Tournament. The Pac-12 champions went ahead by 15 points with 6:34 remaining and held off Ohio State in the closing minutes.
The Buckeyes gave the Wildcats all they could handle, even with standout freshman and likely NBA lottery pick D'Angelo Russell struggling with his shot. Russell scored nine points and made just 3 of 19 shots.
(5) Utah 75, (4) Georgetown 64
Utah is headed back to the Sweet 16 for the first time in a decade.
Brandon Taylor scored 14 points and Delon Wright added 12 and the Utes beat Georgetown on Saturday.
Georgetown pulled within 49-47 on D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera's hard-fought layup before Joshua Smith's decisive dunk tied the game at 49 with 8:40 left.
Dakarai Tucker's layup stretched Utah's lead to 66-59 at the 1:40 mark and Georgetown couldn't catch up.
(11) UCLA 92, (14) UAB 75
Tony Parker led five Bruins in double figures with a career-high 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as UCLA beat UAB to advance to its second straight Sweet 16.
The Bruins, the team many thought shouldn't had even been in the field of 68, have won six of their last seven games in earning their first consecutive Sweet 16 berths since reaching the Final Four three straight seasons between 2006 and 2008.
(6) Xavier 75, (14) Georgia State 67
Jalen Reynolds and Myles Davis came off the bench for a combined 38 points as Xavier end the biggest feel-good story of the NCAA Tournament with a victory over Georgia State.
The Musketeers advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in six years under coach Chris Mack.
Georgia State whose injured coach Ron Hunter worked the sideline in a rolling chair, Baylor Thursday. Hunter, who tore his Achilles tendon celebrating his team winning the Sun Belt Conference title, and his son and star player, RJ, became the darlings of the tournament.
