The last time James Reimer played for the Toronto Maple Leafs was during the offensive 9-2 shellacking at the hands of the the Nashville Predators at Air Canada Centre on Nov. 18.
Since that point the Leafs had gone 6-1-1 behind the strong play of goalie Jonathan Bernier before Wednesday night's game at Joe Louis Arena against the Detroit Red Wings.
Naturally, some fans weren't pleased when Reimer got the call — you know, with the Nashville fiasco still fresh to Leaf Nation.
But Reimer's 41-save performance Wednesday night was the reason the Leafs were able to win their seventh game in the team's last nine contests. Actually he didn't just win the game for Toronto — a 2-1 shootout victory — he stole it.
In the second period alone, Reimer made 12 saves, including one on this breakaway chance by Wings centre Riley Sheahan (Seriously, what are you doing here, Jake Gardiner?).
He was even better in the third period, stopping all 18 shots.
With less than 10 minutes remaining Wings forward Johan Franzen thought he had the go-ahead goal when he spun around with a backhand, but Reimer was there to stick out the left pad.
For the game, the Leafs were outshot 42-19 but it didn't matter because of Reimer.
While he did allow one goal in the second period to Gustav Nyquist, Reimer was nearly flawless the rest of the way giving up just one shootout goal to Pavel Datsyuk.
Mike Santorelli scored the shootout winner but it was Reimer who saved two points for the Leaf in the end.
