A pair of Canadian NHL teams began home-and-home series as the Leafs won in Detroit, while the Oilers suffered another loss to Anaheim. In Montreal, a heartfelt final farewell for Jean Béliveau touched an entire country.

Maple Leafs steal 1 against Red Wings
When the Maple Leafs and Red Wings last met in Detroit on Oct. 18, Toronto may have felt a point was stolen as Pavel Datsyuk scored the only goal of the game with 10 seconds left in overtime.
When the two teams met Wednesday night it was a similar game, except this time, it was the Leafs, and more specifically Toronto goaltender James Reimer, who provided the thievery after a 2-1 shootout win.
Reimer stopped 41 of 42 shots in regulation and overtime as the teams tied 1-1. Gustav Nyquist had the Detroit goal in the second period, matched by Phil Kessel's equalizer in the third.
But it was the efforts of Reimer, making his first start since Nov. 18, who enabled the Leafs to carry on to a shootout, making 18 stops in the third period alone.
In the shootout, Reimer stopped two of three Detroit shooters while Tyler Bozak and Mike Santorelli managed to beat Jimmy Howard to secure the victory, Toronto's fifth in six games.
Oilers can't find a way past Ducks
They kept it close, but close isn't going to cut it for the Oilers, who fell 2-1 in Anaheim to the Ducks.
It was their 13th loss in 14 games. For the Ducks, the victory was their fifth in a row and gave them 43 points on the season, the most in the NHL.
Matt Beleskey, in the first period, and Ryan Kesler, in the second, gave the Ducks a 2-0 advantage. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins responded for the Oilers just 53 seconds into the third period but the Oilers could not manage to score the equalizer.
'My captain, bon voyage': the Jean Belivéau funeral
It was Montreal Canadiens' former captain Yvan Cournoyer who quoted poet Walt Whitman in his eulogy to his roommate Jean Béliveau, 10 years his senior whom Cournoyer saw in almost a father-son relationship. 'O captain, my captain, bon voyage,' he exclaimed in a tearful eulogy at Mary Queen of the World Cathedral in downtown Montreal.
The funeral was attended by prime ministers past and present and an honour roll of exemplary Canadiens players including Serge Savard, Ken Dryden, Dickie Moore, who joined Cournoyer in delivering eulogies. Team owner Geoff Molson, dozens of alumni including Guy Lafleur and an assortment of government officials and political leaders were in attendance, as well as the Béliveau family to honour the 20-year player and Canadiens administrator who drew universal praise for his talent and his decency.
