Monday was a holiday in both Canada (Thanksgiving) and the United States (Columbus Day), but the NHL didn't take the day off.
Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos scored a hat trick as the Lightning ended the Montreal Canadiens' winning streak, while Ottawa Senators forward Clarke MacArthur's goal was enough to beat the Florida Panthers.

Habs' win streak over
The Habs' streak ended with an abrupt thud. Monday began well enough with Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec being named the NHL's first star for his four goals that led to the Canadiens to a 3-0 start. But nothing went right when they faced off against the Lightning in Montreal's fourth straight road game. With Tampa Bay leading 2-1 in the second period, Lightning defenceman Anton Stalman robbed Habs forward Jiri Sekac with a sliding stop. It was all downhill from there. Stamkos effectively handled Montreal all by himself with a hat trick and goalie Carey Price was chased out of the game. The Lightning went on to hammer the Canadiens 7-1. Canadiens coach Michel Therrien could sense his team wasn't into the game.
MacArthur lifts Sens over Panthers
The Ottawa Senators earned their second victory of the season with a 1-0 win over the Florida Panthers. MacArthur scored the only goal Ottawa would need on a pretty power-play goal. That was enough for goalie Craig Anderson, who earned his 27th career shutout. Still, not many people were there to witness Florida's loss as an NHL record-low of 7,311 fans (I know using that term is also funny to me) showed up to watch the game. This drew more mocking on Twitter.
Avs' Briere to the rescue
Daniel Briere's 300th NHL goal against the Boston Bruins had a little magic to it. Not only did he deliver the struggling Colorado Avalanche their first win (a 2-1 victory) of the season, he did so with less than a second remaining on the clock. The struggling Bruins hoped for a boost from the return of top scorer David Krejci, who'd missed the first three games with an undisclosed injury. Krejci played 19 minutes but was held without a point. The loss dropped the Bruins to 1-3-0, and they've scored only four goals. In Buffalo, the Sabres were no match for the Anaheim Ducks, who skated to a 5-1 victory with rookie William Karlsson scoring the first two goals of his NHL career.
Iggy back in Boston
Colorado's Jarome Iginla returned to Boston for the first time since signing a three-year, $16-million US deal with the Avs in the off-season. Iginla, who scored 30 goals for the Bruins last season, has suited up for four different teams over the last three campaigns after spending his first 15 with Calgary. He's still looking for his first point of the season.
