It only took 4:42 of the opening period for Leaf fans to get on beleaguered defenceman Dion Phaneuf.

The Montreal Canadiens drew first blood in the much-anticipated season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night at Air Canada Centre. Leafs' goalie Jonathan Bernier let in a soft goal, but Phaneuf was the focus of blame.

Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty skated around Phaneuf and directed a harmless-looking shot that beat Bernier.

Moments later, the often-maligned Phaneuf was the target of criticism on twitter.
