The Toronto Maple Leafs and Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings finally earned their first victories of the NHL season. The Leafs spoiled the New York Rangers' home opener, while the Kings had no problems beating up on the Winnipeg Jets.
Here are three of the best stories from Sunday night's action:
Leafs get on track with 1st win
Leafs coach Randy Carlyle won't have to hear about his impending demise — at least for one night. After beginning the season with two straight losses, including a stinker against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, the Leafs responded with a convincing 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers, spoiling the Blueshirts' home opener at Madison Square Garden. Toronto got a bit of a scare when goalie James Reimer left in the third period after getting clipped in the head by Rangers centre Dominic Moore. But Reimer said after the game that he was "fine." The Leafs exploded for five goals in the second period – three in a 4:25 span. Even better for the Buds was the breakthrough game of Phil Kessel, who scored a goal and added two assists.
Nash skips 3rd for maternity ward
About the only good news for the Rangers occurred late in the first period when Rick Nash tied the game. It was his fourth goal of the season. Why is this newsworthy? Nash is about to become a dad "any minute" now. Nash told Sportsnet reporter David Amber during the first intermission that the team trainer had his cell phone and was just waiting for the call. Well, Nash didn't return for the third period as he dashed to hospital to be with his pregnant wife.
Kings dump Jets
The Kings finally woke up from their Stanley Cup hangover. Like the Leafs, the champs looked lethargic in their first two games before beating up on the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 at Staples Centre. Tanner Pearson, Tyler Toffoli and Jeff Carter each chipped in with two points. The Jets have lost their last two games and at least one fan expressed his expectations for the rest of the season.
