The Montreal Canadiens failed to get through opening day of training camp Thursday without one of their regular players getting hurt.
Centre Tomas Plekanec tweaked an elbow performing the long jump during off-ice physicals in Brossard, Que., and reportedly favoured the elbow for the rest of the NHL team's workout.
The 31-year-old Plekanec is entering his 10th season with the Canadiens and coming off a 20-goal, 43-point campaign.
He added four goals and nine points in 17 playoff games but was also a minus-7.
Elsewhere, right-winger Brendan Gallagher, coming off a strong sophomore season, stood out Thursday.
The 22-year-old reached Level 13 in the beep fitness test, which measures cardiovascular endurance.
Players run back and forth across a 90-foot course, rigged to wires that monitor their heartbeat. The beeps become more frequent as time progresses and the tone of the beep changes to match the increasing intensity.
Afterwards, Gallagher told reporters he spent the off-season improving his cardio as he expects an increased role this season and to play more minutes.
But the Edmonton native added he won't change his net-crashing ways.
