Milos Raonic reaches Italian Open semifinals

Canadian Milos Raonic reached the semifinals of a major event for the first time this year, beating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy at the Itallian Open on Friday.

The Thornhill, Ont., native prevailed by scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and will next face either Novak Djokovic or David Ferrer.

Raonic, the No. 8 seed, led by a set and a break at 6-3, 4-3 before losing his serve for the first time in the tournament. Chardy broke again at 6-5 to force a third set.

Raonic also beat Chardy last week at the Madrid Open.

On the other side of the draw, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are set to play on Friday. The winner faces the survivor of a quarter-final match between veteran Tommy Haas and Grigor Dmitrov.

On the women's side, Sara Errani took advantage of a supportive crowd to beat second-seeded Li Na 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and the reach the Italian semis for the second consecutive year.

The 10th-seeded Errani is attempting to become the first Italian woman to win Rome since Raffaella Reggi took the title 29 years ago.

Li was unusually inconsistent, committing 52 unforced errors to Errani's 21.

Errani celebrated by waving her arms to incite the crowd. Her semifinal opponent will be either 2007 and 2008 Rome champion Jelena Jankovic or third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska.

The Italian Open is the last key warmup before the French Open starts in nine days.
