Don Cherry says defencemen Dion Phaneuf and P.K. Subban of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, respectively, have to improve the way they approach situations in the defensive zone.

During his Coach's Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday, Don Cherry gave his take on the recent play of the blue-liners and the decision-making of St. Louis Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock.

Cherry said Phaneuf can ill afford to be wandering to the point on coverage while Subban has to stop sticking out his bum to hit opposing forwards into the sideboards. As for Hitchcock, Grapes says he shouldn't send big forward David Backes on the ice to target an 18-year-old like Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon in an attempt to send a message not to mess with their star players.
