U of T goalie Brett Willows' night to remember

University of Toronto goalie Brett Willows got to the opportunity to be the backup goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night after James Reimer had to leave the game against the Carolina Hurricanes with an injury.

A collision early in the game between Reimer and teammate Josh Leivo forced the team to make the call.

The Varsity Blues goaltender was contacted right after the incident and asked to suit up as an emergency backup.

"I was just sitting down for supper with some of the boys of the team," Willows said. "My chicken chow mein had just got set in front of me, took about two bites and then my phone started buzzing..."

"I was initially pretty numb, I wasn't really thinking anything at that particular moment," he said about the experience. "I put 20 bucks down on the table, told them to keep the change and sprinted back down Bloor to Varsity Centre."

The 23-year-old kinesiology major wasn't allowed to sit on the bench with the rest of the team due to his contract clause, but was dressed in the equipment room and ready to go if needed.
