Baseball's July 31 non-waiver trade deadline was a dud from a fan's perspective (a total of seven deals) but it doesn't mean we'll see a repeat before the final cutoff on the last day of this month.
Remember the blockbuster last August between Boston and the Los Angeles Dodgers that saw Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett and outfielder Carl Crawford along with Dodgers slugger Adrian Gonzalez switch addresses? That move happened on Aug. 25.
Among the other players traded last August: pitcher Joe Saunders (to Baltimore), shortstop Stephen Drew (to Oakland), former Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill (to Arizona) and outfielder Delmon Young (to Detroit).
On Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays traded utility man Emilio Bonifacio to the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named later or cash.
Last week, the Texas Rangers, seeking a replacement for suspended outfielder Nelson Cruz, claimed Alex Rios off waivers and swung a deal with the Chicago White Sox. The teams reportedly were talking trade prior to the July deadline.
If a player clears waivers, he is eligible to be traded to any team. Waiver claims go in reverse order of standings, so contending teams might put a claim on a player just to block him from joining a rival. Players that are claimed but eventually pulled back by their current club and not traded can't be moved for the balance of the season.
Some believe the suspensions looming from the Biogenesis case, which have since been announced, slowed trade action last month. But things might pick up in the next few weeks. Last year's addition of a second wild card in the American and National leagues could cause a contending team to wait until late August to determine if it's a buyer or seller.
