The U.S. Library of Congress revealed a fantastic piece of Washington baseball history, just a day ahead of the Nationals hosting the San Francisco Giants in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.
The find?
A film reel that shows the only known footage of Game 7 of the 1924 World Series.
The American League's Washington Senators (now the Minnesota Twins) won the title that year after a Game 7 walk-off win over the New York Giants in the 12th inning.
The reel was located a few months ago in the rafters of a garage in Worcester, Mass., along with eight other film canisters.
The estate belonged to a man who had recently passed away. The property had been sold several times over the years, and it is believed that ano one knew of the canisters existed.
The film, shot on Bay State nitrate, which was a competitor of Kodak at the time, and was known for deteriorating, was in remarkably good shape. Mold and mildew were found on just a few portions of the reel.
The footage captures one of the great World Series pitching performances by Senators ace Walter "Big Train" Johnson, who pitched the final four innings on short rest.
Johnson's performance set the table for the victory, as Earl McNeely's single scored Muddy Ruel from second base for the winning run.
The reel also captures U.S. President Calvin Coolidge taking in the game along with 40,000 other fans at D.C.'s Griffith Stadium.
The championship still stands as the only World Series title to be won by a Washington D.C. club.
Washington fans are no doubt hoping the serendipitous find is a positive omen of what's to come, as the Nationals attempt to copy what their ancestors' accomplishment against the Giants 90 years earlier.
