Just call Alex Ovechin an old softy.
The Capitals superstar hosted an American Special Hockey Association skate with 60 children and adults at the team's training facility in Arlington County, Va.
During the event, 10-year-old Ann Schaab, who has Downs Syndrome, skated toward Ovechkin and invited him on a sushi date.
Ovechkin accepted and delivered on his promise prior to the Capitals' home pre-season game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
Ann and her parents were given a tour of the team's training facility.
Ann had a chance to sit in Ovechkin's locker room stall where she delivered a zinger when she noted the star's helmet "smelled like his head."
Kids say the darndest things.
Ovechkin then surprised his date as he entered the locker room. He gave Ann a personalized jersey and flowers, then drove her to Verizon Center for the game. After the Capitals defeated Carolina 5-2 – of course Ovechkin scored – the two headed out to their sushi date with Ann's parents posing as chaperones.
"I was pretty surprised when Ann skated over and asked me out during our skate," said Ovechkin. "I thought it was a good idea and decided to take her up on it. It was great to see a smile on her face. She is a terrific and funny kid. She seemed to have a lot of fun and I was very pleased to spend some time with her."
