Blame it on the heat, a locked-in opposition, an off day or all of the above.
Saturday was a day of shocking results across the sporting world.
At the U.S. Open in New York, five-time champion Roger Federer lost in straight sets to the No. 14 seed, Marin Cilic, in semifinal play. Federer, seeded No. 2, said his opponent played "with no fear."
At one hour 45 minutes, the match was the fifth-quickest Grand Slam defeat for Federer, who lost by scores of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, top-ranked Novak Djokovic was eliminated earlier in the day by No. 10 Kei Nishikori, who became the first man from Japan to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since 1933.
He appeared more lively on the court than Djokovic as the temperature neared 37 C at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It is the first time since January 2005 that a major final will be contested without at least one of Djokovic, Federer or Rafael Nadal, a trio that has won 34 of the previous 38 Grand Slam trophies.

Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Phillies, who entered Saturday last in the National League Central, upended division-leading Washington, thanks in large part to a seven-inning gem by former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher A.J. Burnett.
The 37-year-old right-hander won his eighth game of the season, limiting the 79-61 Nationals to one earned run on six hits while striking out four.
In NCAA football, Virginia Tech's defence stood out as the Hokies stunned No. 8 Ohio State 35-21 before a crowd of 107,517 at Ohio Stadium.
The Virginia Tech defence stymied freshman Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett late in the fourth quarter after he relieved injured three-year starter Braxton Miller.
North of the border, the No. 9 Queen's Gaels were surprised by Ottawa 37-30 at home in Canadian university football action.
Gee-Gees running back Mack Tommy punched the ball in from two yards out with only 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter to put his team in front for good.
Quarterback Derek Wendel passed for 401 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another 104 yards.
