Toronto Maple Leafs forward Carter Ashton will have a hearing Friday with the NHL Department of Player Safety for his hit on Calgary Flames defenceman Derek Smith on Wednesday night.

The incident occured at 16:56 in the second period when Ashton drove Smith into the boards from behind. He was assessed a two-minute boarding penalty and an additional five-minute fighting major for an altercation with Flames defenceman Shane O'Brien.

Smith remained in the game after the hit. Toronto won the game 4-2.

Ashton, 22, has one assist in 10 games this season.
