Dave Bolland was in obvious agony, unable to put any weight on his left leg as he attempted to make his way slowly to his team's bench.

The Toronto Maple Leafs forward needed the help of his teammates to get off the ice, the result of getting cut on his ankle by the skate of Vancouver Canucks forward Zack Kassian in the second period of Vancouver's 4-0 win on Saturday night.

Bolland was taken from the arena on a stretcher and later went to the hospital to have surgery.

The incident invoked memories of Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson last season, who was injured on a play by Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke and cost him a large chunk of his season.

Watch the video above and judge for yourself: Do you think the play was intentional by Kassian? Or was it an accident?
