Expect Daniel and Henrik Sedin to have a little more jump in their step for Saturday's Hockey Night in Canada matchup against Toronto after Vancouver's twins deepened their pockets Friday.
Canucks general manager Mike Gillis announced he has signed the Swedish duo to four-year contracts through the 2017-18 NHL season. Each deal is valued at $28 million US, according to multiple reports.
The Sedins are in the final year of five-year, $30.5 million pacts and would have been unrestricted free agents next July.
"Daniel and Henrik are exemplary leaders, teammates and humanitarians and we're very pleased to have them as part of our team for the long-term," Gillis said in a statement.
The 33-year-old natives of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, are 1-2 in Canucks' scoring this season with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Henrik, the Canucks' captain, is tied with defenceman Kevin Bieksa for the team with a plus-9 rating while Daniel's six goals are second only to fellow forward Ryan Kesler's eight.
"Few players in the history of this club had more significant roles in contributing to the success of this team and to our community and we look forward to many more years with their positive influence leading the way."
Henrik is the franchise leader in points (792), assists (610), plus-minus (plus-200) and consecutive games played (629). He ranks second in franchise history in games played (940) and third in game-winning goals (33).
Daniel is second in team history with 773 points. The brothers surpassed former franchise leader and fellow Swede Markus Naslund last season.
