Ottawa Senators defenceman Eric Gryba officially became Public Enemy No. 1 in Montreal Thursday night.

With the score tied 1-1 in the second, Gryba laid out Habs centre Lars Eller at 13:28, drawing the ire of Canadiens players and fans.

The hit occurred in Montreal's end, as Canadiens defenceman Raphael Diaz sent a suicide pass up ice to Eller, who appeared to be drilled in the head by Gryba's shoulder.

Eller collapsed face first to the ice and was bleeding profusely from his forehead. Eller did sit up but was eventually wheeled off the ice on a stretcher.

Gryba was assessed a five-minute interference major and a game misconduct. The Canadiens scored on the ensuing power play. The Sens, however, rallied for a win 4-2 to take Game 1.

Eller suffered facial and dental fractures, along with a concussion.

He was taken to hospital for observation.
