NHL playoff race: 5 stories from Thursday night

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 10 April 2015 | 21.22

The Jets and Flames clinched playoff spots, the defending Stanley Cup champs are out, the Senators moved into wild-card position and the Canadiens' Carey Price passed two legends to set a new record.

Here are five stories from a big Thursday night in the NHL playoff race:

Jets return to playoffs

For the first time since 1996, Winnipeg will host a Stanley Cup playoff game.

Despite losing 1-0 in a shootout to the Colorado Avalanche, the Jets clinched a playoff spot as the Calgary Flames defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-1. That result also put Calgary back in the playoffs and eliminated the Stanley Cup champion Kings.

Winnipeg has 97 points and sits in the second wild-card spot in the West.

It was a tight game against Colorado, with the most exciting plays coming from Jets' goalie Ondrej Pavelec and Avs goalie Reto Berra, who made 41 saves.

A bit of bad news for Winnipeg as forward Mathieu Perreault left the game in the second period and did not return due to an upper-body injury.

Flames eliminate Kings

With a win over the Kings, Calgary is headed to the post-season for the first time since 2009. The Flames are in third place in the Pacific Division with 97 points, and will meet Vancouver in the first round.

The Kings were eliminated from playoff contention, becoming the first reigning Stanley Cup champions to miss the post-season since the Hurricanes in 2006-07.

Calgary's Jiri Hudler scored his career-high 30th goal of the season in the first period and followed it up by setting a new career-high mark by netting No. 31 in the third.

Senators move into wild-card spot

The Senators dominated as they blanked the Rangers 3-0 to move into the first wild-card spot in the East, vaulting ahead of the Bruins and Penguins.

Ottawa has 97 points, sitting one ahead of Pittsburgh and two ahead of Boston. The Senators have chased the Bruins for weeks, finally overtaking them as Boston lost 4-2 to the Panthers.

The Senators can secure their playoff future with a win or by taking the Flyers to overtime in their final game of the season on Saturday. They have gone 22-4-4 since Feb. 10, when they were 14 points out of a wild card.

Andrew "The Hamburglar" Hammond improved his record to 19-1-2, making 26 saves, including an incredible stop on the Rangers' Kevin Hayes.

Price sets wins record

The Canadiens' Carey Price made history, recording his 43rd win of the season as Montreal beat the Red Wings 4-3 in overtime.

Price passed Ken Dryden and Jacques Plante to set a new record for most wins by a Canadiens goalie in a regular season.

His teammates celebrated with the old shaving-cream-on-the-towel move.

By forcing overtime, the Red Wings earned one point, enough to clinch a playoff spot. Detroit has 98 points and sits in third place in the Atlantic Division.

Canucks stay ahead of Flames

The Vancouver Canucks held onto home-ice advantage in their playoff matchup against Calgary by defeating the Arizona Coyotes 5-0 to improve to 99 points and maintain their hold on second spot in the Pacific Division.

Calgary has 97 points, so Vancouver only needs a point in its season finale against Edmonton (or a Flames loss) to ensure home ice.
