Alex Ovechkin returned to familiar territory on Tuesday, netting his 50th goal of the season.

The Washington Capitals forward reached the mark for the sixth time in his career in the first period versus the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ovechkin buried a snap shot from the top of the left circle, leading to loud cheers and salutes from the home crowd.

He becomes only the sixth player in NHL history, along with Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy, Mario Lemieux, Marcel Dionne and Guy Lafleur, to score at least 50 goals in a season six times.

No other player is on pace to score 50 goals this season (Steven Stamkos and Rick Nash are tied for second with 40), and Ovechkin was the only player do so last year when he led the NHL with 51.

The last players other than Ovechkin to reach that plateau were Stamkos (60) and Evgeni Malkin (50) in the 2011-12 season. Ovechkin recorded 38 goals that year.

The 29-year-old's personal best was 65 goals in the 2007-08 season.

The goal brings Ovechkin's career total to 472, which ties a franshise record also held by Peter Bondra.
