The Canadiens fell to Washington as Alex Ovechkin became the Capitals' all-time leading goal scorer, while the Senators scored late in overtime and the Flames, Canucks and Oilers all went down.
Here are four stories from Thursday night in the NHL:
Ovechkin becomes Capitals' all-time top scorer
In what could be a first-round playoff matchup, the Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin scored two goals as his team downed the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 in a shootout.
Ovechkin scored his 473rd goal as a Capital, surpassing Peter Bondra to become the franchise's all-time leading goal scorer.
"Alexander the Great" followed his record-setting goal with another puck in the back of the net to serve the Canadiens a double dose of his offensive prowess. He has a league-leading 52 goals this season.
Washington has won three in a row, earning another two points to increase to 96. They sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division, nine points behind the Rangers.
Despite the loss, the Canadiens still sit No. 1 in the Atlantic Division with 103 points.
Senators' Wiercioch wins it in OT
The Ottawa Senators scored right in the nick of time.
With only 17 seconds left in overtime, Patrick Wiercioch slapped home the winning goal as the Senators edged the Lightning 2-1.
With the win, Ottawa's playoff dream stays alive as it remains three points behind the Bruins for the final wild-card spot in the East. Boston beat the Red Wings 3-2 earlier in the evening but the Senators have a game in hand to help them catch up.
Senators goalie Andrew "the Hamburglar" Hammond had a strong outing, making 28 saves and enjoying the support of the crowd.
Monahan scores 30th for Calgary
The lone offence for Calgary during it's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Blues came from Sean Monahan, who scored his 30th goal of the season to keep St. Louis from earning a shutout. The 20-year-old is the youngest player in franchise history to hit that milestone.
Flames goalie Jonas Hiller made 39 saves while Calgary's Kris Russell provided some shot-stopping support, breaking the NHL single-season blocks record with his 274th during the loss.
The victory clinched a playoff spot for the Blues, who sit in second spot in the Central Division with 101 points.
Meanwhile, Calgary sits in third place in the Pacific Division, four points behind the Canucks. The Flames have 91 points and maintain a slight lead over the Kings, who increased their point total to 90 with a commanding 8-2 win over the Oilers. The Kings passed Winnipeg for the final wild-card spot in the West. They are tied in points but Los Angeles owns the tie-breaker.
Blackhawks clinch playoff spot.
The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 and punched their ticket for a visit to the playoffs.
Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger scored a breakaway goal, cleverly avoiding Canucks defenceman Luca Sbisa, to tuck the puck home past Eddie Lack.
The Hawks sit third in the Central Division with 100 points, one behind the Blues, three behind the Predators and five ahead of the Wild.
Vancouver stays put in second place in the Pacific Division at 95 points, four ahead of Calgary.
