3 stories from Wednesday night in the NHL

The Boston Bruins had a chance to open some daylight over Ottawa in the East wild-card race, but ran into an unstoppable goalie in Washington. The Anaheim Ducks could have wrapped up top spot in the West, but failed against Dallas, and the Leafs suffered another humiliating defeat.

Here are three stories from last night's NHL games:

Holtby has Bruins' number

Braden Holtby did something no other goaltender in NHL history has done to the Boston Bruins. The 25-year-old Capitals goaltender shut out the Bruins for the third time this season to complete a season-series shutout sweep.

The 3-0 victory followed whitewashes turned in by Holtby on Oct. 11 (4-0) and March 14 (2-0). Mike Smith of the Phoenix Coyotes achieved a similar feat against the San Jose Sharks in 2011-12.

It was Holtby's ninth shutout of the season and his 41 victories tied the franchise record. He made 27 saves.

The Bruins failed to put any distance between themselves and the Ottawa Senators in the race for an Eastern Conference wild-card spot. Both teams have 95 points with two games left, although the Bruins have a two-win edge in the ROW tiebreaker (that's regulation and overtime wins).

Boston plays Thursday at the Florida Panthers and Saturday at the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Senators also face two road tests, at the New York Rangers Thursday and in Philadelphia Saturday.

Washington received first-period goals by John Carlson and Matt Niskanen and a second-period score from Marcus Johansson as it strengthened its hold on second place in the Metropolitan Division, three points up on the Islanders.

Ducks lay an egg against Stars

Anaheim wasted a good opportunity by dropping a 4-0 decision at home to Dallas. The Ducks had a chance to wrap up the Western Conference's top seed with a victory but sank like rocks against the visiting Stars.

The Ducks were third in the NHL in home wins with 26 behind only Tampa Bay (30) and Nashville (28) but missed their chance to claim another conference title, remaining just two points ahead of St. Louis, with the Blues having two more games to play while the Ducks are down to one.

Jhonas Enroth enjoyed the evening for the Stars, turning aside 19 shots for his second shutout of the season after coming over via a trade from Buffalo. Jamie Benn picked up three assists, getting a pair of them on goals by Patrick Eaves, to tie John Tavares and Sidney Crosby for the scoring lead with 83 points.

Lacklustre Leafs aimless on road again

Two teams heading in opposite directions crossed paths in Columbus Wednesday night and the host Blue Jackets won for the 10th time in 11 starts, while the Maple Leafs dropped their eighth consecutive road game in a 5-0 pasting in Ohio.

It was the fifth straight win at home for the Blue Jackets, who have climbed over the .500 mark on the strength of a 13-1-1 stretch of late. It's a great turnaround since the Blue Jackets still are below .500 at home for the season after losing more than 500 man-games to injury.

Meanwhile, the Leafs put up 35 shots against Sergei Bobrovsky but were never in the contest. Columbus fired four goals past James Reimer in 20 shots, sending him to the bench for Jonathan Bernier, who blocked all but one of 13 shots directed his way.
