3 NHL stories from last night

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 02 April 2015 | 21.22

The Leafs talked about winning, but couldn't make it happen, Sidney Crosby reached a milestone, and the Ducks solidified their spot at the top of the Pacific Division for the third year in a row.

Here are three stories from Wednesday night's NHL action:

Phaneuf can't rally Leafs

The Leafs are now 1-15-1 in their last 17 tries in Buffalo following another setback, this time a 4-3 loss to the Sabres.

Prior to the game, Toronto's captain Dion Phaneuf spoke about his team's desire to turn things around at First Niagara Center, where the Leafs haven't won since January of 2013.

A win seemed within grasp for the visitors as they led 3-2 heading into the final frame, however Matt Moulson and Matt Ellis scored 1:41 apart to spoil those hopes.

Here's Ellis' s goal that held up as the game winner:

The result was met with mixed reviews from the crowd because many Sabres and Leafs fans these days are cheering more for the possibility of winning the draft lottery than for their teams to win.

Milestone night for Crosby

While the Penguins continue to battle for playoff positioning, a 4-1 home loss to the Flyers showed that they still haven't found a way to solve their state rivals.

The Flyers are now 13-2-1 at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh since it opened in 2010-11.

However, a bright spot for the home crowd  was watching Sidney Crosby net his 300th career goal when he battled through traffic to tap in a rebound to open the scoring in the first period.

Crosby leads the NHL with 80 points and is attempting to secure the Art Ross Trophy for the second year in a row.

As for the Penguins, they fell back from second to third in the Metropolitan Division, relinquishing the spot to the idle New York Islanders. Both teams have 95 points, but the Islanders hold the tie-breaker. If the playoffs started today, the Penguins and Islanders would meet in the first round.

Ducks mighty once again

The Ducks needed just one point to clinch the Pacific Division title for the third year in a row, but they went the extra mile in defeating the Oilers 5-1.

Corey Perry scored his 33rd goal of the season and notched his 600th career point in the process to build the Ducks' lead to 3-0 in the second period.

Perry is just the fourth player in franchise history to reach that mark, along with Teemu Selanne (988), Ryan Getzlaf (676) and Paul Kariya (669).

With 107 points, Anaheim is currently the front-runner for the Presidents' Trophy.

If the playoffs started today, they would face the Winnipeg Jets in the opening round.
