The five Canadian NHL teams that played had all the angles covered. The Flames and Canucks were playing to solidify playoff positions, while the Senators were hoping to keep their win streak going. As for the Leafs and Oilers, they continue to compete for pride.
Here are four stories from Tuesday night:
Flames rise without Giordano
Locked in a battle with the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division, the Calgary Flames scored an important 3-2 overtime victory in Philadelphia in their first game after news broke that defenceman Mark Giordano would miss the rest of the season.
Jiri Hudler, with an assist from Johnny Gaudreau, who grew up a Flyers' fan and played schoolboy hockey at the Wells Fargo Center, scored 1:23 into the extra period.
The Flames carried a 2-0 lead into the third period, thanks to goals by Sean Monahan and Mikael Backlund, before the Flyers, fighting to catch Boston in the Eastern Conference, tied the game on goals 4:05 apart by Sean Couturier and Nick Schultz.
Leafs road losing streak ends in bizarre fashion
Fed up with a number of issues and on the heels of a morning rant by Phil Kessel in defence of Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf, the Maple Leafs finally broke through on the road in Florida in a strange and wild encounter that saw two goaltenders injured for the Panthers in Toronto's 3-2 victory.
The Leafs hadn't won a road game since New Year's Eve in Boston, a stretch of 16 games. After some of the tension surrounding the club lifted with the passing of the trade deadline, the Leafs overcame two one-goal deficits to claim victory with third-period goals by Nazem Khadri and Peter Holland.
What made the game even more bizarre were injuries to Panthers goalies Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya. Luongo was hit on the shoulder and side of the head by a Leo Komarov shot late in the first period. He did not return to start the second.
Montoya took over, only to suffer a lower-body injury on Khadri's tying goal 22 seconds into the third period. Montoya left, spent 11 minutes in the dressing room, and then returned with Florida goaltenders coach Robb Tallas, who was allowed to dress as his backup. But later in the third period, it was Luongo who suddenly reappeared and replaced Montoya for the final few minutes. Bizarre indeed!
Sharks take another bite out of Canucks
Figuring that Eddie Lack needed a break after giving up 10 goals in the last two games, the Vancouver Canucks turned to recent call-up Jacob Markstrom on home ice against the San Jose Sharks. But after allowing three goals on three shots, Lack was back to work in relief of the Swedish goalie.
The second and third goals, the latter by Logan Couture, were scored 27 seconds apart.
That deficit proved to be too much as the Canucks lost, 6-2.
Henrik Sundin had both Vancouver goals in a losing cause, his 14th and 15th of the season. The first goal was his 900th career point in the NHL.
The rest of the Canadian story
Two other Canadian teams played Monday as a couple of hot goaltenders met in Minnesota, with the Wild's Devan Dubnyk winning the battle over Andrew Hammond and the Ottawa Senators, 3-2 in a shootout.
Meanwhile, Edmonton hosted the Los Angeles, and the Kings, on the outside looking in for a playoff spot, overpowered the Oilers 5-2 to keep pace with the Flames.
