NHL: 4 stories from Sunday

Written By Unknown on Senin, 16 Maret 2015 | 21.22

The Ottawa Senators kept themselves in the playoff conversation with another dramatic win, the Capitals and Bruins had a score to settle, the Penguins really missed Evgeni Malkin, while in Columbus Nick Foligno tried to give his team a lift with a buzzer beater.

Here are four stories from Sunday's NHL action:

Hamburglar steals another

What else would you expect from netminder Andrew Hammond, other than for him to be instrumental for the Senators, this time in a 2-1 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The "Hamburglar" is now 10-0-1 in his first 11 NHL starts, dating back to Feb. 18. During that span, Hammond has allowed just 16 goals.

Hammond did his part to earn the extra point sunday, making 27 stops and denying all three of the Flyers' attempts in the shootout.

Bobby Ryan took care of business at the other end by slipping the decisive marker past Ray Emery.

Hammond was named the second star of the game and acknowledged the crowd at Canadian Tire Centre by holding up a hamburger.

The Senators have won three in a row and remain within striking distance of a wild card spot with 77 points.

A lot to play for in Washington

The East's two wild card teams, the Capitals and Bruins, entered their meeting on Sunday tied with 82 points, so something had to give.

John Carlson and Nate Schmidt each tallied for Washington and Braden Holtby slammed the door shut to secure a 2-0 victory for Washington.

Prior to the game, Capitals bench boss Barry Trotz admitted that his team was well aware of the importance of getting two points, especially since there is a standings board prominently displayed in the dressing room.

Trotz had also been critical about his team's recent struggles and talked about the need to win and play with desperation.

Nevertheless, the Capitals responded with a sense of urgency that drew praise from their coach.

Malkin-less Penguins blown out

With star centre Evgeni Malkin out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, Pittsburgh was crushed 5-1 at home by Detroit.

Malkin was injured by a hit in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Boston, which Sidney Crosby also missed with an unspecified illness. Crosby returned against the Red Wings, but it didn't do much good as Marc-Andre Fleury was pulled after allowing four goals on 16 shots.

Foligno wins battle with clock

The Blue Jackets ultimately fell 3-2 to the Hurricanes, but Nick Foligno put Columbus on the board first in timely fashion.

Foligno showed some quick hands in being able to slip the puck past Anton Khudobin with less than a second remaining in the opening frame.
