Things continue to heat up in the Western Conference with victories for Winnipeg and Vancouver, while Alex Ovechkin put in a two-goal night to down Toronto and Jaromir Jagr hit another milestone.
Here are four stories from Sunday:
Western playoff race heats up
Things got heated in a match between the Winnipeg Jets and the Los Angeles Kings. With both teams vying for a Western Conference playoff spot, the current wild card owning Jets came away with a 5-2 victory.
Forward Andrew Ladd had two, while new acquisitions Tyler Myer and Drew Stafford had one goal apiece and Blake Wheeler put the game out of reach with an empty-net marker in his return.
The result puts Winnipeg only three points away from Chicago for third place in the Central division, but also put three points between them and the Minnesota Wild, who have been narrowly trailing the Jets in the standings.
The emotion of chasing a playoff run spilled over in the second period when young Jets forward Mark Scheifele and Kings defenceman Brayden McNabb started a scrum after a very physical shift. There was a total of 52 penalty minutes in the game.
Wild night in Vancouver
A flurry of first period scoring and second period penalties in a game against the St. Louis Blues culminated in a 6-5 overtime victory for the Vancouver Canucks.
Both teams scored twice in the first period and followed that exciting period up with a middle frame highlighted by chippy play between Blues' Ryan Reaves and Canucks' Zack Kassian.
Reaves reached over two defenceman to land a punch that left Kassian with a painful new look. Each player received a two-minute roughing penalty and a 10-minute misconduct.
A wild third period saw Vancouver squander a two-goal lead when St. Louis scored three unanswered goals. However, Nick Bonino, Radim Vrbata and Chris Higgins were all successful in their shootout attempts to claim the other point.
The Canucks gained a five-point lead over the Calgary Flames for a strong hold on the second spot in the Pacific division.
Shutout back-to-back
It was another one of those games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who were shutout 4-0 for the second consecutive night. This time, it was at the hands of the Washington Capitals and the league's top goal scorer Alex Ovechkin.
Capitals goalie Brayden Holtby made 31 saves for his 18th career shutout to ensure the Leafs' 16th straight road loss.
While Toronto couldn't manage to score all weekend, Washington captain Ovechkin had no problem on that front. He netted the game-winner only 33 seconds from puck drop for his 40th goal of the season.
The 29-year-old added another goal and an assist for his third three-point night of the year. He now holds a four goal lead over New York Rangers forward Rick Nash in the season's goal scoring race.
The legend continues
Veteran forward Jaromir Jagr already seems to be fitting in with his new team. Acquired by the Panthers in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, the 43-year-old scored his first goal for Florida.
The first period goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning was his 12th of the season, but also happens to be the 717th of his career, which ties him with Phil Esposito for fifth all-time in goals scored.
The Panthers ultimately took the battle of Florida 4-3 over the Lightning.
