Leafs coach Peter Horachek wasn't making any excuses for his team's effort against the Blues. The Canadiens were busy building a wall in Arizona. In Nashville, the Jets piled on another loss for one of the league's top teams. While in San Jose, the Canucks made themselves feel at home.
Here are four stories from Saturday night's NHL action:
Toronto left singing the blues
Whether the Leafs' season hit rock bottom on Saturday night is a matter of debate. If that low point hadn't already been reached, then at the very least, things can't get any worse from here.
There is likely some light at the end of the tunnel for Toronto, however there is still a lot of hockey to be played before the draft lottery.
For the moment, the Leafs are left picking up the pieces after a blowout 6-1 loss at the hands of the St. Louis Blues, a powerhouse in the Western Conference and a potential Stanley Cup Contender.
St. Louis found the net three times in the opening frame and never looked back, chasing starting goalie Jonathan Bernier in the process.
James Reimer didn't have much luck either as he also surrendered a trio of goals over the final 40 minutes.
The "highlight" of the night for the Leafs was a bone-crushing hit delivered by Dion Phaneuf after the whistle on T.J. Oshie.
Canadiens quietly go about their business
The Canadiens were able to avenge an encounter from earlier this season by earning a gritty 2-0 victory over the Coyotes in the Valley of the Sun.
Last month, the Coyotes walked into the Bell Centre in Montreal and delivered the Canadiens a 3-2 defeat.
But on this night, Carey price slammed the door shut, making 29 saves to record his seventh shutout of the season.
Price made a series of remarkable stops in the third period to preserve what was a one goal lead at the time. The sequenced ended with the puck resting on Price's right pad just in front of the red line.
Furthermore, Lars Eller's second-period goal, a nifty spin-o-rama, held up as the game winner.
Brendan Gallagher potted an empty netter with two seconds remaining to seal the win.
Jets add to Nashville's misery
The Jets were dealing with the absences of Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little who both suffered injuries Wednesday versus Ottawa, but that didn't stop them from leaving Nashville with a 3-1 triumph.
Neither goaltender was particularly busy, with Michael Hutchinson turning away 20 shots for the Jets and Pekka Rinne making 21 saves for the Predators.
Blake Wheeler scored the go-ahead marker for Winnipeg and he also chipped in with a helper on the insurance goal.
As a result of their losing streak, which has reached a season-high six games, the Predators grip on the top spot in the Central Division has become a lot less firm.
Meanwhile, the Jets are keeping pace in their attempts to secure a wild card spot.
Canucks find home away from home
The Canucks collected their third win in as many tries at the SAP Center in San Jose this season with a 3-2 victory on Saturday.
So far this season, the visiting team has won each game in this series. That amounts to two wins for the Sharks in Vancouver.
Eddie Lack was huge for the Canucks in stopping 38 shots, while Radim Vrbata provided a spark. He tallied two goals, including the difference-maker on a 4-on-3 power play early in the third period.
