NHL: 4 stories from Saturday night

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 01 Maret 2015 | 21.22

The latest instalment of the Leafs, Canadiens rivarly wasn't exactly a game for the ages. In Columbus, there were a few interesting side notes to go along with David Clarkson's debut with the Blue Jackets. While the Senators and Oilers showed some grit against tough Western Conference foes.

Here are four stories from Saturday night's NHL action:

Easy night at the office in Montreal

The rivalry between the Leafs and Canadiens hasn't held as much caché lately for the obvious reason that they are trending in extremely different directions.

Proof of this was in the pudding on Saturday.

Montreal cruised to a 4-0 victory at the Bell Centre, with Manny Malhotra's first goal of the season early in the opening frame holding up as the game winner.

In his 53rd game of 2014-15, Malhotra found the back of the net when he buried a nifty drop pass from Dale Weise.

Carey Price made 30 saves on route to recording his sixth shutout this season.

The Canadiens are the East's best team with 87 points, while the Leafs can be found much further down the ladder with the likes of Columbus, Carolina, and Buffalo.

Clarkson makes debut for Blue Jackets

There were several coincidences in play when David Clarkson made his debut for Columbus.

Nationwide Arena, the place the Blue Jackets call home, is where the right-winger suited for the first time as a member of the Leafs in 2013.

Furthermore, Saturday night's opponent just so happened to be the New Jersey Devils who Clarkson left as a free agent to join his hometown team in Toronto.

And if that isn't enough, in Montreal, Sergei Gonchar returned to the lineup after missing two weeks because of a hit delivered by Clarkson.

Clarkson was slotted into the top line with Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno, however the Blue Jackets were blanked 2-0 by the Devils.

Wearing No. 18, Clarkson logged just over 16 minutes and picked up a penalty for boarding.

Senators on a roll

The Senators went to work in San Jose and came away with a 4-2 victory for their effort and a five-game winning streak overall.

Mike Hoffman potted the decisive goal for Ottawa on the power play in the third period and then the left-winger put the game on ice with an empty netter in front of a loud contingent of Sens fans at SAP Arena.

The Sens have given the nod to rookie backstop Andrew Hammond for each of the five wins. Although Hammond was not able to keep the door shut for a third-consecutive game, he was still rock solid in turning away 28 of 30 shots.

Oilers singing the blues

It was a tight battle for most of the night, but the St. Louis Blues managed to squeak out a 2-1 victory over the Oilers at Rexall Place in Edmonton.

Paul Stastny's goal with just under six minutes remaining was the difference maker.
