It was another dismal night for Phil Kessel, Jonathan Bernier and the Maple Leafs as they visited Edmonton, while Montreal hoped to finally solve Tampa Bay.
Here are four stories from Monday night's NHL games:
Rough start
The Toronto Maple Leafs' western road trip will be one to forget for goalie Jonathan Bernier. The 26-year-old was pulled eight minutes into an eventual 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers after allowing three goals on four shots.
Oilers forward Benoit Pouliot scored his second goal of the night only 52 seconds after Jordan Eberle made it 2-0. Bernier looked defeated as James Reimer took his place between the pipes.
It was the second game in a row that saw Bernier allow three goals, as he let in that many in a 4-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.
Many fans expected more in a game against the 29th-place team, who were riding a seven-game losing streak.
Leafs forward Phil Kessel had some pointed words after the game.
"We're still working, we're still trying, it's just a tough time for us," he said. "We have good players in here, we still have really good players, we're just not getting it done."
"This is my all-time low in hockey right now. It's a tough go."
Suspension pending?
Controversial Leafs forward Nazem Kadri could get a call from the Department of Player Safety after a third-period illegal check to the head of Matt Fraser.
Fresh off a three-game team suspension, Kadri appeared to be trying to squeeze by Fraser along the boards in the Leafs' end. Instead, he landed an elbow that sent Fraser out of the game.
He only received a two-minute minor for the incident, but Oilers captain Andrew Ferrence later ran Kadri in retribution.
The cruellest month?
March hasn't been the best month for the Montreal Canadiens, who continue to close out their season on a bit of a slide.
Heading into their second meeting in less than a week, the Tampa Bay Lightning had already outscored the Canadiens 12-3 over the season series.
They went on to claim a 4-2 victory over Montreal. The loss is the Canadiens' sixth in eight games, although they grabbed a point in two overtime defeats.
Steven Stamkos's second-period goal off an assist from Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty summed up the Habs' recent struggles.
Digging deep
Despite the Canadiens' comeback falling short due to a late third-period Lars Eller holding penalty, a few players showed heart in trying to jump-start their team.
Birthday boy Brandon Prust dusted it up with Mike Angelidis on two separate occasions and even took the body to Lightning star goalie Ben Bishop.
Pesky forward Brendan Gallagher followed suit, dropping the gloves for his first fight of the season against rookie Vladislav Namestnikov.
The 5-foot-9 forward held his own and his team noticed. Montreal forwards Tomas Plekanec and Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau each had a goal in response to make it close.
