On a night when the weary Flames nearly stormed back to burn the Senators, a pair of promising young stars sparkled in Raleigh, N.C., and they played playoff-type hockey in the Windy City.
Here are four stories from Sunday in the NHL:
Senators nearly licked by Flames' rally
A weary Calgary team wrapping up a seven-game road trip meets a surging club with a fresh goaltender in Ottawa. Should be a decided advantage for the Senators, right? Craig Anderson was back in net for his first start since Jan. 21, and no doubt inspired by the play of rookie Andrew "The Hamburglar" Hammond, who's been stealing victories (7-0-1 record) that have returned the Sens to the playoff chase.
The Flames were doing OK, having won three straight and four of six on their road swing but they appeared to have hit a wall when they fell behind 4-0 at 7:40 of the second period on Mike Hoffman's goal that drove the Flames' Karri Ramo from the net.
However, it was a revitalized Flames unit that came out for the third period and, thanks to four goals, including a pair from Kris Russell, Calgary came all the way back.
In the shootout, Kyle Turris managed to keep the Senators alive when he matched a Johnny Gaudreau goal. In the sixth round, Erik Karlsson beat Jonas Hiller and Anderson stopped Josh Jooris on the Flames' final attempt. The 5-4 victory stretched the Senators' win streak to three, keeping them five points back of Boston for the final wild card spot in the East.
Oilers blown away by Hurricanes' barrage
The Oilers and the Hurricanes have been playing for next year and beyond for most of the season. Sunday in Raleigh, they unleashed some of their offensive might and future promise with a couple of youngsters firing hat tricks.
Twenty-year-old Elias Lindholm scored his first NHL hat trick for Carolina and added two assists in the Hurricanes' come-from-behind 7-4 win over the Oilers. Edmonton's 21-year-old Ryan Nugent-Hopkins notched his second career hat trick in a losing cause.
It was Nugent-Hopkins who keyed a three-goal opening period by the Oilers when he opened the scoring at 10:19 of the first period.
Nugent-Hopkins, aided by linemate Jordan Eberle, who had a goal and two assists, had a goal in each period to bring his season total to 19.
But the Hurricanes erased the three-goal deficit with six consecutive scores, with the second and sixth goals by Lindholm, who completed the scoring, bringing his sophomore season total to 14.
Take a look at all six goals scored by the precocious snipers, starting with Nugent-Hopkins.
Playoff-style hockey in Chicago
In what looked like an exercise in playoff-style hockey, the Rangers and the Blackhawks battled through a scoreless 60 minutes, directing 64 shots at Chicago's Corey Crawford (35 saves) and the Rangers' Cam Talbot (29 saves). Nothing was doing for the two playoff contenders, who are hanging tough in their respective Central (Chicago) and Metropolitan divisions (Rangers).
Everything changed shortly after overtime began as New York's Mats Zuccarello set up Derick Brassard, who fired the game-winner past Crawford after 32 seconds of extra time.
