Canadian Kevin Pangos and dual citizen Kyle Wiltjer both scored in double figures to lift Gonzaga to victory, Dayton couldn't have done it without Whitby, Ont. natvie Dyshawn Pierre, Duke did the expected to Robert Morris, while Louisville narrowly avoided an upset.
Here is a roundup of Friday's March Madness action:
(2) Gonzaga 86, (15) North Dakota State 76
Kyle Wiltjer scored 23 points to lift Gonzaga to victory over North Dakota State.
Wiltjer was born in Portland, Ore., but holds dual citizenship.
Kevin Pangos, of Holland Landing, Ont., had 18 points for Gonzaga, which is making its 17th straight NCAA Tournament appearance but has gone five straight seasons without a trip to the Sweet 16.
(11) Dayton 66, (6) Providence 53
Dyshawn Pierre scored 20 points and Dayton rode a loud home-crowd advantage to upset Providence.
The 11th-seeded Flyers (27-8) will face Oklahoma on Sunday night, with a chance to reach the round of 16 for the second straight season.
(1) Duke 85, (16) Robert Morris 56
Quinn Cook scored 22 points to help No. 1 seed Duke get off to a torrid start and beat Robert Morris.
Freshman Jahlil Okafor added 21 as the Blue Devils wasted little time getting their offence revving, hitting their first seven shots and 12 of 15 to quickly build a big lead.
(1) Wisconsin 86, (16) Coastal Carolina 72
Big Ten player of the year Frank Kaminsky had 27 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season, and Wisconsin defeated Coastal Carolina.
Sam Dekker had 20 points and Nigel Hayes added 15 against a Coastal Carolina team that gave a game effort but had no answer for the 7-foot Kaminsky or, for that matter, any of his hulking teammates.
(2) Kansas 75, (15) New Mexico State 56
Second-seeded Kansas did its best to restore some luster to the Big 12.
Frank Mason III scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack, and the Jayhawks rolled to victory over New Mexico State, giving their beleaguered conference its first NCAA Tournament victory in four tries this March.
Perry Ellis added nine points for the Jayhawks.
(2) Virginia 79, (15) Belmont 67
Malcolm Brogdon scored 22 points, Justin Anderson re-emerged as a scoring threat and the Virginia Cavaliers survived another opening-round scare, defeating 15th-seeded Belmont.
Anderson, playing with his broken left pinky taped to his ring finger, had 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Anthony Gill added 16 points.
Belmont had clawed within two behind 25 points from Crag Bradshaw, but the Cavaliers outscored the Bruins 17-7 over the final 4:37 of the game.
(4) Louisville 57, (13) UC Irvine 55
Freshman Quentin Snider hit the winning free throws and Terry Rozier made the saving steal to help Louisville top UC Irvine in a close finish.
With the game tied, Snider snagged a rebound in the corner off a long miss by Luke Nelson and drew a foul when Will Davis II crashed into him.
Snider made the free throws with 8.9 seconds left and the Anteaters never got a final shot, thanks to Rozier's pick of Alex Young as he was moving up the court.
(4) Maryland 65, (13) Valparaiso 62
Dez Wells converted an offensive rebound into a three-point play with 1:44 left and Varun Ram stripped away Valparaiso's last chance as the Maryland Terrapins held off the determined Crusaders.
Alec Peters led 13th-seeded Valpo with 18 points.
The Crusaders were down 3 with one last chance for coach Bryce Drew to draw up a winning play. He didn't need a length of the court pass as he did when he made the most famous shot in school history back in the 1998 tournament, but Valpo did need a 3.
Keith Carter went up for one in the corner, but Ram reached in and swiped the ball away — maybe getting some of Carter's arm in the process.
(5) Northern Iowa 71, (12) Wyoming 54
Paul Jesperson led five Northern Iowa players in double figures with 16 points, Seth Tuttle added 14 and the Panthers held off the comeback of No. 12 seed Wyoming for a victory.
The Panthers built a 21-point lead after scoring 11 of the first 12 points to start the second half. That huge lead was whittled to seven points twice but the Cowboys could get no closer. Wes Washpun scored eight of his 10 points in the final 9 minutes to help the Panthers advance.
(5) West Virginia 68, (12) Buffalo 62
Tarik Phillip hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left while the shot clock was winding down, adding the clinching points as fifth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers held off Buffalo.
Devin Williams, who led the Mountaineers with 17 points and nine rebounds, hit two free throws with 2:10 left to give his team the lead for good.
Mid-American Conference Tournament champion Buffalo did not score over the final 2:42 against the physical Mountaineers.
(7) Michigan State 70, (10) Georgia 63
Denzel Valentine scored 16 points and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to help Michigan State hold off Georgia.
Travis Trice scored 15 points and Branden Dawson had a strong second half for the seventh-seeded Spartans, who answered a push from the Bulldogs with a poised run to take back control.
(7) Wichita State 81, (10) Indiana 76
Fred VanVleet matched his career high with 27 points, Ron Baker made big free throws late, and the Wichita State Shockers defeated Indiana.
Baker scored 15, making 7 of 8 free throws in the last 2 minutes to allow Wichita State to hold off the Hoosiers.
Freshman reserve Zach Brown had eight of his career-high 11 points in the second half, with six coming during the Shockers' decisive run.
(8) Oregon 79, (9) Oklahoma State 73
Joseph Young scored 27 points, Elgin Cook added 18 and the eighth-seeded Oregon Ducks beat the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Le'Bryan Nash had 18 points before fouling out in his final game for Oklahoma State. Anthony Hickey added 17 points, and Phil Forte and Tavarius Shine finished with 12 each.
(7) Iowa 83, (10) Davidson 52
Aaron White took a glimpse at the Davidson roster and every matchup he could possibly face was in his favour.
A big night was in order for Iowa's star. And once White got rolling, the Hawkeyes couldn't be stopped.
White scored 13 straight points as part of Iowa's 18-3 run early in the second half, and the Hawkeyes rolled into the South Region round of 32 with an 83-52 rout of No. 10 seed Davidson.
(3) Oklahoma 69, (14) Albany 60
TaShawn Thomas powered his way to 18 points inside and versatile Buddy Hield added 15 to lead Oklahoma past Albany on Friday night, carrying the Sooners into the Round of 32 after early exits the last two years.
(8) San Diego State 76, (9) St. John's 64
JJ O'Brien scored 18 points, Dwayne Polee II added 15 points on five 3-pointers and San Diego State defeated St. John's 76-64 on Friday night in their opening game of the NCAA Tournament.
Skylar Spencer added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Aztecs.
