Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones is in a tie for first place after beating undefeated Russia 7-5 at the women's world curling championship in Sapporo, Japan on Monday.
Canada stole a point in the opening end and another in the fifth before Jones sealed the victory by drawing to the button in the final end.
The win draws Canada, which rebounded from a Sunday loss to Sweden by thrashing China 7-1 in the Monday morning draw, into a first-place tie with Russia, Switzerland and Japan with a 4-1 record.
"It's a big day for us, but what I think is more important is that we had kind of a tough loss last night [against Sweden]," said Jones. "We controlled it early and just kind of let it slip away. So to come out and pull some teams back to us and have two big wins against teams that are playing well, and to play well ourselves, gives us a ton of confidence for tomorrow."
The defending Olympic champion again received a good performance from lead Dawn McEwen, who shot 86 per cent.
In other Draw 6 action, Sweden beat Denmark 7-5, Norway slipped past Scotland 8-7 and Japan defeated Finland 7-5.
Canada's next match is against the U.S. on Tuesday.
