Canucks bolster playoff hopes; Bruins falter: NHL

Written By Unknown on Senin, 23 Maret 2015 | 21.22

The Canucks won a tight game in the desert while the Bruins playoff hopes shined a little fainter and the Rangers claimed sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.

Here's three stories from Sunday night.

Canucks triumph in the desert

The Vancouver Canucks earned an important two points with a 3-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes, strengthening their post-season ambitions. With the win, Vancouver moves into a four-point lead in the standings over their Pacific Division rival, the Calgary Flames.

The Canucks are looking for their sixth playoff berth in seven seasons.

It was a tight game with the score stuck at one until late in the third when Alexander Edler scored an unassisted power-play goal to secure the win for Vancouver.

The Canucks' Henrik Sedin followed it up with an empty-netter to finish off the Coyotes.

Bruins playoff hopes hurt

The Boston Bruins suffered a blow to their post-season dreams losing 5-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning and giving the Senators a little more room to catch them for the final wildcard spot in the East.

The Bruins have nine games left and sit one point ahead of Ottawa with 84. The Senators have 11 games left and are in the midst of a six-game winning streak, supported by a hot-goalie in the form of Andrew "Hamburglar" Hammond.

The Lightning's Steve Stamkos got into a fight, something he doesn't usually do, with the Bruin's Brad Marchand during the first period.

Rangers claim top spot

The New York Rangers claimed first place in the Eastern Conference with a decisive win over the Anaheim Ducks. Anaheim could have been the first team to earn 100 points this season but the Rangers were too much for them, scoring four unanswered goals to shutdown the Ducks 7-2. They scored twice in two minutes in the third period.

New York is now ahead of the Montreal Canadiens.

The Anaheim Ducks' Corey Perry scored his 30th and 31st goals during the first period hitting the 30-goal plateau for the fifth time in his career.

Perry first hit the mark during the 2008-09 season scoring 32 goals. He scored a career-high 50 goals during the 2010-11 season and followed that performance up with 37 the next season. He last hit the mark during the 2013-14 season, scoring 43 goals.
