NHL: 5 stories from Friday night

Malcolm Subban's NHL debut in goal turned out to be a nightmare, while the Leafs, Canucks, Flames and Oilers all fell short Friday night in a dismal evening for Canadian squads. All the dour details in NHL: 5 stories.

Nightmare debut for Malcolm Subban

Midway through the first period of his first National HockeyLeague start Malcolm Subban may have thought this isn't a bad way to begin. His Boston Bruins were up 1-0 and he hadn't even faced a shot. At the end of the first period he had stopped all three that came his way as he hoped to end the Bruins' five-game losing streak.

Then came the first shot of the second period, one he'd like to have back. Take a look.

Within four minutes the Blues took two more shots, and they, too, wound up in the net. Six shots, three goals and Subban was headed to the bench as Tuukka Rask replaced him. It was a debut that the 21-year-old younger brother of Montreal's P.K. Subban would sooner forget.

The Blues went on to a 5-1 victory.

Leafs no match for Staal Bros.

The Carolina Hurricanes are actually beneath the Toronto Maple Leafs in the standings, but they sure do bring out the worst in the struggling buds. Friday the 'Canes completed a series sweep with a 2-1 triumph in Raleigh, sparked as usual by the Brothers Staal.

Jordan Staal opened the scoring in the first period with a power play goal, his 18th of the season. Then after the Leafs tied it on Brandon Kozun's first NHL goal, the Hurricanes regained the lead just 16 seconds later on a score by Eric Staal.

That goal, and the goaltending of Cam Ward, playing in his 499th NHL game, made it stand up.

It was Toronto's 14th consecutive road loss, extending a record streak of ineffectiveness, and brought the team's record to 2-15-2 under interim coach Peter Horachek. They are 0-for-2015 in road games as February winds down.

The only Leafs' bright spot on the evening was Kozun's goal in his eighth NHL contest.

Canucks' comeback falls short

The Vancouver Canucks spotted the New Jersey Devils a 3-0 lead, battled back on a pair of scores by Zach Kassian, missed several chances to tie the game and ultimately dropped a 4-2 decision in New Jersey.

Mike Cammalleri had two of the Devils goals, while defenceman Adam Larsson provided three assists. Ex-Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider got the victory, stopping 21 Vancouver shots.

The 28-year-old Schneider announced plans to treat his teammates to dinner.

Schneider offered this response to Cammalleri.

Flames sunk by Ducks rally

Calgary was cruising along with a nice 2-0 lead at home against the Anaheim Ducks when the ice must have melted because the Ducks paddled their way to a 6-3 victory, keyed by five third period goals.

Andrew Cogliano started the Ducks' resurgence with Anaheim's first goal at 15:08 of the second period. The Ducks came out flying in the third scoring four times in 8:32 to seize control. Sean Monahan got one back for the Flames with just under two minutes to play before Hampus Lindholm hit an empty net to close out the decision.

The key goal was provided by Ryan Getzlaf on a shot that caromed off the boards behind the net and went in off Flames' netminder Jonas Hiller to give the Ducks their first lead. Here it is.

Dubnyk Wild about the Oilers

Devan Dubnyk used to love wearing his Edmonton Oilers' jersey. After all that was his first NHL team and home for five seasons. Now, he loves seeing those Oilers sweaters as he notched his fifth victory of the season against Edmonton, collecting his sixth shutout of the season in the Minnesota Wild's 4-0 victory.

Dubnyk, 28, began the season with the Arizona Coyotes but was traded to the Wild and now has five shutouts in 16 starts for the Minnesota club which is only one point away from the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Oilers, who have dropped three of their last four games, could only muster 15 shots at Dubnyk.
