The Leafs' misery continued in Nashville, the Canadiens' struggles against the lowly Sabres continued to defy logic, and the Canucks beat the Jets in an all-Canadian matchup that went to OT.
Here's what happened Tuesday night in the NHL.
Leafs come full circle against Predators
It was back on Nov. 18 when the Leafs hit rock bottom in a 9-2 loss to the Nashville Predators. They quickly recovered from that and went on their most productive run of the season, a 9-1-0 stretch where they were the highest scoring team in hockey. Now, after a disastrous January where they had just one win, the Leafs carried a nine-game losing streak into Tuesday's outing in Nashville.
In an entertaining, but nonetheless fruitless contest, the Leafs fell 4-3 to the Predators for their franchise record-tying 10th consecutive loss.
This game-saving stop by Predators' backup goaltender Carter Hutton to rob Morgan Rielly pretty well epitomized how things have been going for the Leafs.
That sweeping save by Hutton kept the score at 4-3 and preserved the Nashville victory. The Leafs overcame a 2-0 deficit on three goals, two of them after Leafs' netminder Jonathan Bernier left the game after cutting his leg with his own skate.
James Reimer held the fort and stopped four shots as the Leafs jumped in front on a tying goal by Nazem Khadri and Mike Santorelli's go-ahead marker. But when Bernier returned to the net early in the third period the Predators rallied for two scores and the victory.
Canadiens can't figure out Sabres
The Canadiens, Canada's most successful hockey team this season, have one major problem. They can't seem to beat the last-place Sabres. In their fourth meeting of the season the Habs and the Sabres played their fourth one-goal game, and for the third time the Sabres came out on top, this time 3-2.
Montreal won the first meeting but the Sabres won a home-and-home series Nov. 28-29 prior to Tuesday's matchup. Buffalo was on 14-game losing streak, their longest in history, and Montreal's Carey Price carried a lengthy shutout streak into the game.
But a three-goal first period for the Sabres, capped by former Canadiens' captain Brian Gionta's score, would be enough as the Sabres made the most of their 18 shots against Price.
Senators downed by stingy Devils
Coming off a seven-goal explosion and victory over Arizona Saturday, the Ottawa Senators tried to keep the momentum rolling in New Jersey but ran into a strong defensive effort and goaltender Cory Schneider in a 2-1 loss.
After a scoreless first period, Ottawa rookie Curtis Lazar found a way to get one past Schneider to open the scoring.
Adam Henrique tied it for the Devils and early in the third ageless Jaromir Jagr did most of the work setting up Mike Cammallari's team high 17th goal of the season, which was the game winner.
Schneider wound up with 19 saves as the Devils' won for the seventh time in 11 starts (7-2-2).
Canucks take down Jets in OT
For the second evening in a row, the Winnipeg Jets let a Western Conference Canadian rival creep a little closer to them in the standings. On Monday it was Calgary; Tuesday the Vancouver Canucks twice overcame deficits to edge the Jets, 3-2 in overtime.
Luca Sbisa converted a 2-on-1 break with Radim Vrbata to score the OT winner past Ondrej Pavelec after just 36 seconds of the extra period. It was Winnipeg's fifth loss in a row as they are stuck on 60 points, tied for sixth in the conference. Vancouver moved up to 59 points, two more than the Flames who hold the final playoff spot at the moment.
