The Habs outlasted the Leafs, Vancouver couldn't stop fanning the Flames, the Jets scored a big win in Detroit, and the Senators most definitely did not show the Oilers a good time. Here's what you need to know as every Canadian team was in action on Hockey Day in Canada, which was held on some sort of pseudo-holiday that was clearly not the theme of this article whatsoever.
Habs deal Leaf fans more heartbreak
Montreal and Toronto were having so much fun (punching each other in the face) that they didn't want the night to end.
The latest thorny chapter between the eternal rivals needed an extra session, and when that didn't work, Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais ensured the Habs faithful would go home happy, putting an arrow through the hearts of Leaf fans everywhere by scoring a couple of beauties in the shootout to give Montreal a 2-1 victory.
Also of note – David Clarkson showed everyone what his version of a two-minute date looks like: two fights, 27 penalty minutes, and a game misconduct in a little over two minutes of ice time.
Flames chase down Canucks
The Canucks would love nothing more than to see Calgary further in their rear-view mirror, but they can't seem to get the Flames out of their system. Calgary continues to pursue Vancouver with reckless abandon in the Pacific Division standings, and caught them with a big 3-2 win at the Saddledome. Both are tied for third spot, with Vancouver holding a game in hand.
Sean Monahan netted a couple in the win, and Lance Bouma scored the winner in the third.
Jets find the one (road win)
Winnipeg has walked a lonely road lately, dropping five straight away from home. But the Jets finally found what they were looking for in Detroit, snapping the streak with a heart-stopping 5-4 shootout victory.
Drew Stafford will endear himself quickly to Jets fans if he scores more big goals like the game-winner he potted to win the shootout. Stafford arrived in Winnipeg as part of the deal that sent Evander Kane to Buffalo.
Sens show Oilers no love
The Senators did not show the Oilers a lovely time in Ottawa, flattening Edmonton 7-2 in an afternoon matchup.
But it wasn't all roses and sunshine for the Sens, who saw veteran Chris Neil break fans' hearts by breaking his thumb when he paired off with Edmonton's Luke Gazdic in a not-so-friendly embrace.
Ottawa announced that Neil would be out indefinitely, which might throw a wrench into the Sens' plans come trade deadline – Neil was considered one of the more eligible players to be dealt, with several teams reportedly interested in his services, but now he's likely off the market.
