NHL: 4 stories from Friday night

Another night of hockey brought yet another reason why it's hard to be a Leafs fan. The Jets lost a close one in overtime, while the Flames got extinguished.

Here's four stories from Friday night in the NHL:

Leafs lose record 11th straight

It was a milestone night in Leafs nation as Toronto's shame set the bar for poor play at a new level, setting a franchise-record 11-game losing streak, losing to the Devils 4-1.

The last time the Leafs had a streak this bad was way back during the 1966-67 season when they lost 10 in a row. They lost nine in a row during the 1985-86 season and eight in a row during the 1957-58, 1971-72 and 1987-88 seasons.

Over their last 11 games the Leafs have gone 0-10-1, scoring only 33 goals over the stretch. During that same span, they've been shutout four times. Since Dec. 18, Toronto has gone 3-18-1, the second-worst record in the NHL over that time period.

When the Leafs were last enduring a streak close to this one, Dave Keon was captain, man had not landed on the moon, and Canada wasn't even 100 years old.

If you watched the game at least you can say you saw history in the making.

Elias scores 400th

It wasn't a bad night for one New Jersey Devil in particular as NHL veteran Patrik Elias netted his 400th career goal with a solid wrist shot past Leafs goalie James Reimer.

Elias has played 19 seasons in the NHL, all with the Devils.

Jets crash as Hawks soar in OT

It started off looking good for the Jets as they took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game against Chicago. Things looked different by the second, when the Blackhawks' Patrick Kane evened the score with a backhand goal past Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson.

In extra time the Blackhawks flew higher than the Jets, with Brandon Saad netting the winner for a 2-1 final.

At the end of the game, one disgruntled fan expressed his anger, tossing an Evander kane t-shirt jersey — or shirsey — on the ice. Would somebody tell that guy he's not in Toronto?

Crosby puts out the Flames

The Calgary Flames had a tough night hosting Pittsburgh. They were outshot and outplayed by a Penguins team led by an invigorated Sidney Crosby all the way to a 4-0 win. Crosby had been in a slight slump with only two assists in his last six games.

The Penguins' captain scored two goals and added an assist to make it a three-point night in Calgary. His offensive prowess was highlighted by a one-handed goal midway through the second period.

It was a big night for Marc-Andre Fleury as well as the Penguins goalie recorded his eight shutout of the season and the 36th of his career. Fleury leads the league in shutouts.
