NHL: 3 stories from Wednesday night

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 12 Februari 2015 | 21.22

The Vancouver Canucks padded their wild card lead with a pair from Daniel Sedin, the Chicago Blackhawks proved they have no shortage of firepower and the Pittsburgh Penguins saw the triumphant return of a player from injury.

Here are three stories from Wednesday night.

One twin scores a pair to seal victory

The Vancouver Canucks scored three second period goals in just over six and a half minutes en route to a 5-4 overtime victory in Chicago.

Left winger Daniel Sedin scored the game-winner, his second of the night, a minute and 20 seconds into extra time to extend their season series lead to 2-0 over the Blackhawks.

The win put four points between them and the Minnesota Wild, who are chasing Vancouver for the final wild card spot in a close Western Conference playoff race.

Forward Linden Vey opened up the barrage of second period scoring for the Canucks thanks to a few sloppy clearing attempts by the Blackhawks.

Scoring not an issue in Chicago

Chicago fell short in their attempt at a comeback against the Canucks, but a couple Blackhawks had notable nights despite the loss.

Veteran forward Marian Hossa extended his two-goal a game pace to a third night. The 36-year-old had only one two-goal game this season prior to his recent streak.

His second of the night pushed the game into overtime, earning his team a point in their second consecutive loss. Teammate Patrick Kane earned an assist on that goal for his third point of the night.

Kane's burst of offence gave him a three-point spread over Dallas Stars' Tyler Seguin to lead the NHL scoring race with 62 points.

The 26-year-old Buffalo native got things rolling Wednesday night in Chicago with his 27th of the season.

Triumphant return from lengthy injury

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Blake Comeau missed the last 20 games dealing with a nagging upper body injury. In his first game back since Dec. 22, the 28-year-old proved his absence didn't leave him at all rusty.

A Saskatchewan native, Comeau helped his team to a 4-1 win over the formidable Detroit Red Wings with a two-point night.

He had a hand in each of Pittsburgh's first period goals and scored his 12th goal of the season in the process.

Teammate Patric Hornqvist also had a two-point night for the Penguins.
