NHL: 3 stories from Thursday night

The Vancouver Canucks rallied to complete a comeback, the Montreal Canadiens failed to hold off the Florida Panthers, and the Capitals' firepower was too much for the Winnipeg Jets. Meanwhile, Sidney Crosby got in a rare fight and Mikhail Grabovski was laid out by a big hit.

Here are three stories from Thursday night in the NHL.

Completing the comeback

Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin's two third-period goals, including a late one to push the game to overtime, helped his team to a 5-4 overtime victory at Madison Square Garden.

Vamcouver rallied three times to overcome the New York Rangers. Canucks rookie Bo Horvat extended his point streak to five games, while Sedin earned his second two-goal night of the season.

Canucks forward Alex Burrows was in rare form, piling up a season-high 11 penalty minutes in skirmishes with Mats Zuccarello and Chris Kreider, and scoring on his team's first shootout attempt.

This game marks the fourth time in five starts that Rangers goalie Cam Talbot has allowed three or more goals, perhaps signalling the need for the swift return of the injured Henrik Lundqvist.

Panthers pounce on Canadiens

Despite outshooting the visiting Florida Panthers 39-21, the Montreal Canadiens let a two-goal second period lead slip away in an eventual 3-2 shootout loss.

Until the Panthers launched their successful comeback, Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher was enjoying a milestone night. The 22-year-old opened scoring in the second period by recording his 100th NHL point and following that up with the second two-goal night of his career.

It took a six-round shootout to end the game, when forward Dave Bolland's attempt got past Carey Price, who was undefeated in his last four starts against the Panthers.

Canadiens fans can find some comfort in the fact that Florida's victory puts them only one point behind the rival Boston Bruins for the East's last playoff spot.

Caps' league leaders shine

The Washington Capitals extended their winning streak to three games with a 5-1 trouncing of the Winnipeg Jets. Forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin came up big again in their team's triumph.

Washington's captain has been turning heads on and off the ice recently and Thursday was no different. The 29-year-old scored his league-leading 38th goal of the season and helped on Backstrom's second of the night on a four-on-one.

Backstrom had two power-play goals and an assist to propel him to the top of the NHL points race with 63.

Crosby fights, Grabovski laid out

In a match against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby engaged in a rare fight, only the seventh of his career.

Meanwhile, New York Islanders forward Mikhail Grabovski exited his game early after the Nashville Predators' Eric Nystrom laid him out with a big hit.
