Sparked by Andrew Cogliano and Ryan Getzlaf, the Anaheim Ducks took a page out of the Calgary Flames playbook Friday night staging a huge third-period comeback.
Both had a goal an assist with Getzlaf's fluke goal putting the Ducks ahead for good as Anaheim tied a team-record with five goals in the third period in a 6-3 win over the Calgary Flames.
"We needed this win. Bottom line," said Cogliano, whose goal at 15:08 of the second cut the Ducks deficit to 2-1 heading into the third period. "I don't think we've been playing the game we've been wanting to as of late and I guess there's no better team to beat in that situation than the Flames since they've been so strong."
Less than three minutes after Francois Beauchemin tied it 2-2 on a nice set up from Cogliano, Getzlaf's slapshot from the blue-line missed the net but caromed sharply off the end boards, deflecting into the net off the back of the leg of goaltender Jonas Hiller.
"It's nice to have one bounce that way right now," said Getzlaf. "I felt like I've been shooting the puck a little bit more lately and haven't been able to hit the net a whole lot. It was nice to miss the net on that one."
Calgary leads the league with 10 wins when trailing after two periods. The Ducks rank second after coming back for the eighth time (8-16-0).
"All our forwards in the last half of the game were really good but you could tell that Cogliano and Getzlaf, two veteran players, stood up and took the bull by the horns, so to speak, and led the way," said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau.
It's the second time in franchise history Anaheim has scored five goals in the third period. The other was Jan. 23, 2004.
"They were just the better team, they wanted it more than us," said Lance Bouma, who scored his 12th of the season for Calgary. "We got back on our heels after we let in a couple goals and that's not something you can do."
A turnover by Mikael Backlund in front of his own net led to Kyle Palmeiri's eventual winner, which made it 4-2 at 11:35.
After Jakob Silfverberg made it 5-2, Sean Monahan's 20th goal got one back for Calgary, but Hampus Lindholm completed the barrage with an empty-net goal at 18:59.
The Flames lose for the first time when leading after two periods. They entered the night a perfect 14-0-0.
Anaheim (36-16-7), the leader in the Pacific Division, wins for just the second time in its last seven games (2-4-1).
"That was as big of a win as we've had all season," said Cogliano.
Matt Stajan also scored for Calgary (32-22-4), which sits third in the Pacific. After a 2-1-1 homestand, the Flames depart on a seven-game Eastern road trip.
"They were better than us in the third, simple as that," said Monahan. "We've got to be better in the third, we know it as a group. We're looking forward to getting on this trip to get some points back."
Making his fourth consecutive start with Frederik Andersen injured, rookie Josh Gibson made 25 saves to improve to 4-4-0.
Hiller had 32 saves to fall to 19-17-3.
