NHL: 5 stories from Saturday night

Jaromir Jagr made some history, the Canadiens are turning heads, and a freight train named "Byfuglien" ran over the Maple Leafs. Here are your stories from Saturday night in the NHL.

Big Buff runs rampant

You only needed to watch a 20-second sequence midway through the second period to know exactly how the Jets-Maple Leafs game went.

In it, Winnipeg defenceman Dustin Byfuglien runs rampant, laying a big hit and keying a furious charge in the Toronto zone, culminating in a goal by Big Buff which was essentially the back-breaker in a 5-1 victory.

Byfuglien was the clear star in a dominant Jets performance, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the rout.

The listless Toronto outing also prompted another jersey toss, the sixth one this season by a Leafs fan. Naturally it was well received by the MTS Centre crowd.

Cool Canucks hang tough

The Vancouver Canucks earned a measure of redemption in a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, a game in which they had to hang on to a one-goal lead late for the second time in a row.

But, unlike Thursday, when the Canucks saw the L.A. Kings turn the tables and snatch the victory, Vancouver held strong, thanks to a big 29-save performance from Ryan Miller and two empty-net goals from Henrik Sedin. Henrik's first empty-netter put him at 200 goals for his NHL career.

Habs serve notice, spoil Perron's debut

We should probably stop asking whether the Montreal Canadiens are an East contender now. Not after they blew away the Pittsburgh Penguins in a convincing 4-1 win on the road to jump to the top of the heap in the conference.

It was Montreal's fifth straight victory on the road, and sixth straight overall.

The only bright spot for the Penguins was that their shiny new forward David Perron scored in his debut. The Penguins acquired Perron from Edmonton on Friday for a 2015 first-round draft pick and centre Rob Klinkhammer.

[Insert something about fine wine and age]

New Jersey's Jaromir Jagr turned back the clock and set some NHL history in the process. At 42 years, 322 days old, Jagr became the oldest player to record a hat-trick in NHL history.

Just don't tell him that.

"I like to score hat tricks, but I don't like the thing you said that I'm the oldest guy," Jagr told reporters after the game. "I don't want to be the oldest guy, but I'm glad I scored."

Jagr's three goals keyed a 5-2 Devils win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Turn away if you hate goals

Thirteen goals were scored during the Predators-Kings game. Three of which were scored by L.A. in the final two minutes, which dramatically forced overtime.

But if you need another reminder why life and sports aren't necessarily fair, it came at the 18-second mark of OT, when the Preds won the game on a Roman Josi goal. Again, that was to make the score 7-6.
