The Canadiens were able to continue their winning ways, while the Flames hit a bump in the road after four-straight victories.
In Minnesota, the Leafs were missing several keys players as they took on the Wild.
However, the news of the day was once again courtesy of the Edmonton Oilers.
Here are four stories from Friday night:
David Perron "just wants to win"
David Perron may have been the happiest camper in the NHL after being dealt from the Oilers to the Penguins.
The move sees the veteran forward being instantly transported from a lottery-bound team to a Stanley Cup contender.
Following the trade, Perron spoke about his desire to win at this point in his career, while graciously saying goodbye to a stay in Edmonton that lasted less than two seasons.
The Oilers dropped their first contest without Perron, the result being a 2-1 shootout loss to the Avalanche.
Meanwhile, the Penguins were firing on all cylinders in a 6-3 victory over the Lightning, giving Perron a glimpse into his immediate future.
The price to pay for Perron was rather steep as the Penguins surrendered a 2015 first-round pick in the deal, but general manager Jim Rutherford apparently addressed a major need for his team.
Canadiens have reasons to celebrate
The Canadiens doubled-up the Devils 4-2 to extend their winning streak to five games.
The win vaulted Montreal into first place in the Atlantic Division and included some special moments for a couple players.
Left-winger Michael Bournival found the net twice to register his first two goals of the 2014-15 campaign. His second marker of the night, which gave the Canadiens a 3-0 lead early in the third period, held up as the game-winner.
It was also a milestone occasion for netminder Carey Price, who appeared in his 400th career game and made 22 saves to pick up his 200th win.
Flames streak comes to an end
The Flames had also been hoping to extend their winning streak to five games, but they were outdone 2-1 by John Tavares and the Islanders.
Tavares struck twice to bring his total to 17 goals this season.
Johnny Gaudreau was able to cut the lead in half late in the third period, giving the home fans something to cheer about, but that wa as close as the Flames would get.
Leafs dealing with injury bug
The Leafs were missing several key players from their lineup in what amounted to a 3-1 loss to the Wild.
It was known well ahead of time that they would be without Joffrey Lupul and Peter Holland, who both suffered injuries against Boston, however the Leafs announced just prior to the game that Nazem Kadri would also be unavailable.
The Leafs shed some light on the extent of the injuries to the trio of forwards after the game.
