NHL: 3 stories from Monday night

The Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames extended their winning streaks thanks to some impressive goaltending, while the Toronto Maple Leafs hit another low.

Here are three stories from Monday night's NHL games:

Canucks take rematch vs. Luongo

Vancouver Canucks rookie Bo Horvat had the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. The 19-year-old scored his third of the season on former Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo, who had beaten his old team in his return to Vancouver on Jan. 8.

Despite current Canucks goalie Ryan Miller's shutout streak ending at 200 minutes with a late third-period goal from Brandon Pirri, it was the night of the goalie in Sunrise, Fla.

The performances on both ends of the ice were pretty impressive, but Miller had to come up big in the third period when his team was outshot 10-1. The 34-year-old just missed earning his third straight shutout, but still helped Vancouver to its third straight win.

Canucks forward Radim Vrbata padded his team goal-scoring lead significantly with his 18th of the season. Vrbata now has an eight-goal spread over the next leading goal scorer.

Flames' Ortio comes up big

In a battle for the last wild card spot in the West, the Calgary Flames downed the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in the final minute of overtime. Heading into Monday night's match, the teams were tied with 51 points in 45 games, with the Flames having the advantage in regulation plus overtime wins.

Calgary's recently sensational goalie Joni Ortio held the game together for his team through the first two periods to earn his fourth win in as many starts. The Flames were outshot 27-9 prior to the third period.

Kings defenceman Matt Greene opened the scoring in the third and Sean Monahan responded for the Flames for his third straight game with a goal.

The Flames' defencemen continued their charge with Dennis Wideman ultimately putting the game to rest with his 12th goal, giving Calgary its fourth consecutive victory.

Leafs' futility continues

Multiple jerseys hit the ice at the Air Canada Centre in another Toronto Maple Leafs loss. They extended their current losing streak to five games, falling 4-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes in a game that saw Jonathan Bernier chased from the net.

One spectator recklessly refused to wait for the play to stop before dumping his jersey. Toronto forward Nazem Kadri had some choice words to offer about the jersey-throwing "fans" during post-game interviews.

A third-period fight that saw team captains Eric Staal and Dion Phaneuf face off seemed to get Toronto going towards the final minutes of the game. Ultimately, it was too little too late as the Leafs continued their downward spiral. They've netted only two goals in their last 300 minutes of hockey.
