Canadiens honour Béliveau with win
A moving tribute. A moment of silence. A heartfelt standing ovation, which extended for two minutes. Thus began the evening at the Bell Centre, a tribute to the extraordinary hero of Quebec and a nation, Jean Béliveau.
With Beliveau's No. 4 prominently displayed at centre ice, as well as in the rafters and draped over his familiar seat behind the Canadiens' bench, an amazing evening unfolded for Béliveau's wife, Elise Couture, their daughter Helene and granddaughters Magalie and Mylene.
The Canadiens, struggling with three straight losses, upheld their end of the bargain as they broke a 1-1 third-period tie with a Tomas Plekanec goal at 15:44 and a Max Pacioretty empty-net goal with one second remaining in a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.
Leafs refuse to fold under Calgary heat
At times they dominated. For stretches they scrambled. But in the end the Maple Leafs held off the Calgary Flames long enough to find the empty net twice and a 4-1 home ice victory.
Badly outshot in the opening period the Leafs grabbed the lead midway through the period on Peter Holland's seventh goal of the season.
In the second period they totally dominated as the Leafs doubled their lead on a masterful display of passing, leading to James van Riemsdyk's power-play goal.
Marcus Granlund cut the Flames' deficit in half but Jonathan Bernier turned away 15 of Calgary's 16 shots in the period. In the final minute, Phil Kessel and then Mike Santorelli found the empty net for the Leafs, who won for the sixth time in their last seven home starts.
Jets rev up attack to down Stars
The Jets turned up the offence to blast the Stars in Dallas, 5-2.
The Jets were worried about controlling league-leading sniper Tyler Seguin, and sure enough, the Stars' sharpshooter scored his 22nd of the season to tie the game in the first period. After the teams exchanged goals, Adam Lowry went to work. His shot went between the pads of Kari Lehtonen who headed to the bench after allowing three goals on 17 shots. His replacement Jussi Rynnas was only in the game a couple minutes, when Lowry popped in a rebound for his fourth goal of the season.
Michael Frolik later scored for the Jets on a breakaway late in the second period to close out the scoring as the Jets ran their road record to 9-4-3. Dallas fell to 0-7-3 against Central Division opponents.
Oilers return to losing ways
Stung by allowing the Oilers to end their double-digit losing streak, the San Jose Sharks bite back Tuesday, skating to a commanding 5-2 victory. Joe Pavelski led the way with a pair of goals. Barclay Goodrow, Logan Couture and Brent Burns also scored for the Sharks, who have won five of six with the only loss coming on Sunday night in Edmonton to the worst team in the Western Conference.
