On Saturday in the NHL, the Maple Leafs continued a season-long tradition, the Senators won for the first time under their new coach, while the Jets and Canucks faltered with home ice opportunities.
Leafs take down weary Wings
Maybe the Toronto Maple leafs caught a break by hosting the Detroit Red Wings who lost at home on Friday night before motoring to Toronto. But while the Leafs had a little luck and some hot goaltending on their side when they beat the Wings in a shootout Wednesday, they were full value for their 4-1 win Saturday.
Just one minute after allowing Detroit a lead on a Niklas Kronwall goal, James van Riemsdyk deflected a Phil Kessel shot with his foot to even the score.
In the second period a long pass from Korbinian Holzer sent Richard Panik in on Peter Mrazek in the Detroit goal and Panik kept his cool, slotting in a backhander. He later showed off his fistic skills, pounding Wings' defenceman Brendan Smith who responded to a tough check with a slash.
Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri rounded out the Leafs scoring as Toronto improved to 12-0 when entering the third period with a lead.

Senators provide first win for Cameron
In his second start behind the Senators bench, Dave Cameron watched his charges work overtime and into a shootout but it was worth the effort as the team and the coach came away with a 3-2 victory in Boston. Cameron succeeded Paul MacLean as coach on Monday.
Twice the Senators came from behind to even the score as Mika Zibanejad in the second period and Dave Legwand, on the power play in the third, sent the game to overtime.
Robin Lehner stopped 29 of 31 shots and then turned aside Reilly Smith and Patrick Bergeron in the shootout.
Zibanejad and Bobby Ryan with the game-winner, were able to beat Tuukka Rask in the Boston goal.
Jets should have Duck-ed
The Winnipeg Jets had a nice streak going of not losing in regulation for eight consecutive games (5-0-3) but along came the Anaheim Ducks to ruin that scenario, 4-1 in Winnipeg.
Bryan little's power play goal, his 12th of the season, gave the Jets early hope as they led 1-0 after one.
But three Ducks goals in the middle period made the difference. After Jakob Silfverberg tied the game, Ryan Getzlaf scored and then set up a Nate Thompson goal after a costly give-away by Jets' netminder Michael Hutchison. Andrew Cogliano added the final tally for Anaheim as they defeated the Jets for the second time in a week at the MTS Centre.
It also extended the Ducks' winning streak to seven, the second time this season they've accomplished that feat.
Canucks overwhelmed by Rangers
Looking for some respite after a gruelling road trip, the Vancouver Canucks came unravelled in a one-sided loss to the New York Rangers, 5-1.
Vancouver finished off their road trek with three losses and left goalie Ryan Miller at the mercy of wave after wave of 2-on-1 and 3-on-1 breaks by the Rangers, resulting in three first period goals by Ryan McDonagh, J.Y. Miller and Mats Zuccarello.
It didn't get much better in the second period as Marc Staal and Zuccarello with his second built the lead to 5-0.
Nick Bonino's third period marker broke the shutout attempt by the Rangers' Henrik Lundquist.
