Sabres sharp in shootout
Game 3 for the Senators under head coach Dave Cameron was a back-and-forth affair. Ottawa had the only goal of the first period, compliments of Bobby Ryan, but saw a flurry of three goals by the Sabres in the second in a span of three minutes and 21 seconds.
The Senators responded with a trio of goals of their own, only to have Buffalo knot the contest with just over three and a half minutes remaining when Brian Flynn tied the score at 4-4.
In the shootout, Matt Moulson of the Sabres led off and scored on Robin Lehner. No one else would find the range as Jhonas Enroth stopped all three Ottawa shooters, although Ryan nearly scored, hitting the post. Make the final 5-4 for Buffalo.
Earlier in the year a visit to Buffalo would have been exactly what Cameron and the Senators needed, but the Buffalo win gave the suddenly sharp Sabres their eighth win in their last 11 starts and sixth in a row at home.
MacTavish becomes Oilers bench boss
Edmonton Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish is going to take an ice-level view of his ailing team as he steps behind the bench as the team's interim head coach with his eventual replacement, Todd Nelson, beside him.
With the Oilers winning only seven of their first 31 games, MacTavish fired Dallas Eakins as head coach Monday. The five-time Stanley Cup winning Oilers are at the bottom of the NHL overall standings and haven't reached the playoffs since 2006.

MacTavish and Nelson, promoted from the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL, will be behind the bench Tuesday in Phoenix as the Oilers meet the Arizona Coyotes.

Penguins strike against Lightning back-up
A couple of teams with 19 wins on the season met in Pittsburgh as the Penguins entertained the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning. The first period was scoreless until the final minute when the teams exchanged goals within 24 seconds, with Brandon Sutter scoring shorthanded for the Pens, before Jonathan Drouin tied it for the Lightning.
Pittsburgh, missing Sidney Crosby and Beau Bennett from their line-up because of the mumps outbreak, took control with a pair of goals in the second period, including the first NHL score by Bryan Rust. Evgeni Nabokov replaced Ben Bishop in the Lightning goal after the first period. A lower-body injury for Bishop was the cause of the goaltending change.
After Brian Dumoulin increased the Penguins' advantage to 4-1, Nikita Kucherov scored a late tally for Tampa Bay to make the final score 4-2 for the Penguins.
Islanders recover to down Islanders
Long Island native Keith Kincaid dreamed about playing in the Nassau Coliseum, but the Islanders ruined the evening for the Devils' goaltender by taking a 3-2 decision over New Jersey in a shootout.
Kinkaid, making only his second NHL start, was provided with a 2-0 lead by the Devils but the Islanders fought back on goals by Josh Bailey in the second period and Matt Martin midway through the third.
That meant trouble for Kinkaid and the Devils because the Islanders are deadly in extra time. They improved to 6-0 in shootouts and 9-0 after regulation time when Kyle Okposo and Bailey were able to score on Kinkaid in the shootout. Jaroslav Halak in the Islanders' goal stopped two of the three penalty shots for the victory, forcing Jacob Josefson to shoot wide in the final attempt.
