The Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames continued their winning ways on Tuesday night, while the Ottawa Senators extended their road woes. Here are 5 stories from Tuesday night:
Leafs reverse home fortunes
It's safe to say the Leafs have gotten over the 9-2 trashing they suffered at the hands of Nashville on Nov. 18 on home ice. While there were tense moments, Toronto skated to a 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars en route to its fourth straight win at Air Canada Centre.
Joffrey Lupul led the way with a pair of goals, while Phil Kessel snapped a five-game drought with his 12th goal of the season. Tyler Bozak continued his tear, scoring for the sixth time in four games.
Toronto's only loss in a five-game stretch was to Pittsburgh in overtime on the road.
The Leafs also did a great job in holding the NHL's top goal scoring Tyler Sequin (18) off the score sheet.
Sequin, who ranks third in the league with 31 points, was a minus-3 for the night.
Canucks happy to see Caps again
Different city, same result. Back on Oct. 26, the Canucks (17-7-1) downed the Capitals 4-2 at Rogers Arena. That script didn't change when the teams shifted to the Verizon Center. The Canucks had their power play rolling as the unit scored three goals in a 4-3 win.
Daniel Sedin scored two goals, including the game winner at 9:39 of the third period when he took a pass from twin brother Henrik Sedin in the left circle and fired a shot to the far side of Capitals goalie Braden Holtby.
The Sedin twins, along with Radim Vrbata continue to drive the Canucks' offence, combining for seven points. Vancouver is now 13-4-1 since that first win against the Capitals this season, and has entered the Western Conference's upper echelon.
Ramo red hot for Flames
The Calgary Flames (16-8-2) remained hot Tuesday night with a 5-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. They got the performance from Karri Ramo that they have come to expect.
The red-hot netminder stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced.
It was rookie Josh Jooris that had the really explosive night for the Flames. The 24-year-old centre had his first NHL hat trick Tuesday to help propel his team to victory.
Senators run into surging Isles
The Senators couldn't get their road trip on the right track in Uniondale, N.Y. After rallying to send the game into overtime, Islanders defenceman Thomas Hickey scored on a wraparound against Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson at 3:06 of the extra time, lifting New York to a 3-2 win.
Ottawa concluded its five-game road stretch going 1-4-0 and will finish a home-and-home series with the Islanders on Thursday.
With their best start in 34 years (since the 1980-81 Stanley Cup winning team) the Islanders have been virtually unbeatable at home, going 12-2-0.
Goalie Jaroslav Halak has a lot to do with it as he's on a 10-game winning streak.
Bortuzzo takes out Jagr
The Penguins' 1-0 victory over the Devils might have set up some fireworks down the road. During the game, New Jersey forward Jaromir Jagr took a head hit from Penguins defenceman Roberto Bortuzzo in the second period. Jagr didn't return to the game and Bortuzzo will have a hearing with the NHL's safety department . After the game Devil's forward Jordin Tootoo sent Bortuzzo a warning.
"I'm not going to forget what number he is," Tootoo told reporters. "It's a long season."
Devils coach Peter DeBoer was also upset at the Jagr hit following his team's loss.
