Three Canadian teams were headed in the right direction, while the Toronto Maple Leafs sought revenge in the second half of a home-and-home series against the Red Wings in Detroit. Here's how the evening unfolded.
Leafs revenge plans nixed
Not much went right for the Maple Leafs at home to the Red Wings last night as they suffered a 4-1 setback. Yet they had a chance for revenge 24 hours later as they headed down the 401 highway to Detroit for the return match at Joe Louis Arena.
Jonathan Bernier got the start in goal for the Leafs and stopped 31 shots. But the one that eluded him was a crusher.
Henrik Zetterberg scored with just 10 seconds left in overtime for the only goal of the contest as the Leafs fell for the fourth time in six starts, 1-0.
Detroit's Jonas Gustavsson in his first start of the season stopped 30 shots for his sixth career shutout.
Habs big guns bury Avalanche
The Montreal Canadiens continued their excellent start to the season with an exciting 3-2 victory on home ice over the Colorado Avalanche.
Carey Price was brilliant for the Canadiens with 32 saves as Colorado scored in the closing minutes and pressed the attack with rookie netminder Calvin Pickard on the bench for a sixth attacker.
Pickard was also solid in his first NHL start outside of a little too much P.K. Subban in the second period. Subban scored on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 and after Alex Galchenyuk upped the Habs' lead, Subban bolted from the penalty box to score a scintillating goal that combined his speed and puck handling ability. Streaking Senators overcome Blue Jackets
A pair of 3-1 hockey teams with stingy defences through four games turned to their back-up goaltenders for this tilt in the nation's capital.
Robin Lehner had his first start for the Senators and didn't disappoint, stopping 38 of 40 shots in the Sens' 3-2 triumph.
Columbus came back from a two-goal deficit with a pair of goals in 41 seconds by Nick Foligno and David Savard to send the game to to the third period, tied at 2-2.
In the third, Mike Hoffman, a healthy scratch the last two games, put the game-winner past Sergei Bobrovsky who replaced the Blue Jackets' starter Curtis McElhinney who allowed the first two scores by David Legwand and Erik Karlsson.
Hoffman had earlier missed on a penalty shot.
With the victory Ottawa kept pace with Montreal just two points behind the Canadiens atop the Atlantic Division.
Perfect start for Canucks
Tight defence. Revamped scoring from the Sedin's line. A perfect start to the season. What else could new Vancouver Canucks coach Willie Desjardins want? How about finding a way to slow down Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos?
The Lightning captain scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season and added an assist in Tampa Bay's 4-2 triumph at Rogers Arena that snapped the Canucks' season-opening win streak at three games.
After scoring twice in the opening frame to provide Tampa with a 2-1 lead, sandwiching a goal by Vancouver's Chris Higgins, Stamkos broke his stick on a shot, went to the bench for another, picked up the puck and set up Ryan Callahan's power play goal, a back breaker that snapped a 2-2 tie.
Alex Killorn added a fourth Tampa Bay goal in the third period to close out the scoring.
