Three Canadian National Hockey league teams carried winning streaks into Friday night play and the one that kept its momentum moving in a forward direction was the suddenly hot Edmonton Oilers.
Streaking Oilers extend Hurricanes misery
It was a question of whose streak would continue in Edmonton. The Oilers two-game run of success or the Hurricanes' season-long skein of ineptitute. In the end, the Oilers made it three victories in a row with a breakaway third period, downing Carolina, 6-3.

Twice Jordan Eberle gave the Oilers the lead with his first two goals of the season but the score remained tied midway through the third. At 12;55 rookie Leon Draisaitl scored his first NHL goal and it proved to be the game-winner as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who scored in his third game in succession, and Matt Hendricks followed for the Oilers in a 6-3 decision.
Jets offence still missing
For a team struggling to score goals, the last thing the Winnipeg Jets needed to do was to face the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Lightning captain Steven Stamkos finished off a brilliant sequence with Jonathan Drouin in the first period and Drouin gave the Lightning a two-goal lead in the second with his first NHL goal.
The Jets, who came into the game without a power play goal this season and averaging less than two goals per game, got one score back when Bryan Little connected with the man advantage, but fell 4-2, for their fifth loss in seven starts.
Varlamov overcomes rude Canucks welcome back
The beginning seemed perfect for the Vancouver Canucks on the road in Colorado. It ended ugly, though, with a 7-3 loss.
Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov making his first start after missing three games with a groin injury hardly had time to adjust his equipment before Daniel Sedin set up his brother Henrik with the opening goal after just 10 seconds of play.
But the fast start would eventually evaporate into the thin Denver air, though the Canucks escaped the first period, maintaining a 2-1 lead after Colorado's and Vancouver's Alex Burrows exchanged goals.
The Avalanche dominated the middle frame and took the lead on goals by Jamie McGinn and Erik Johnson, on a 5-on-3 power play putting Colorado ahead for the first time.
They scored four more times in the third against Vancouver's Eddie Lack with Daniel Sedin having the only reply for Vancouver in the middle of the four Avalanche scores.
The final tally by Jarome Iginla, his second of the night, career # 562, moved him past Mike Modine into 23rd on the NHL all-time list.
